My car had a major break down and I decided to take my car to Greg's. I have heard they were a little pricey and that they take advantage of people by charging way to much for people who do not know much about cars. In the end I thought the price he gave me was a fair price, very accurate to the estimate that I received. The employees were all nice and explained everything clearly so that was a plus.
The only problem I had, and is the reason for the 4 stars instead of 5, was that I brought my car in Thursday night and Friday morning they called me and said it would be done by Monday. Instead, they called me Tuesday right before they closed to tell me my car was ready but I couldn't come pick it up until the morning. They did not have to order any parts or else I would have understood if the job took longer. Other than that inconvenience I would come back to Greg's if I had more car troubles.

Like Kate said in the review below me, everything about this place is true. Go ahead and look at the other reviews. It's like a broken record of complaints.

First of all it took you more than three years to respond,Testimony to how
Greg's Garage conducts bussines.YOU DID NOT CONSIDER MY GIFT CARD! the employee asked the owner in front of me .So you are not being honest stating that you would have.taken care of it.No problem..,I haven't been back !

All I say is they're all about eating money than actually fixing your car. I came in to get my fog lights installed and they couldn't manage to get it installed, yet still charged me? Charged me to attempt to install my lights? I even had a pair of new parts just incase one didn't work, yet they didn't even touch it.. If anything this shop is not the place to go!

No Way!! Beware Reno Ladies...(and Gents):
I'm a 53 yr old female, and stopped in at Greg's Garage on Friday March 6th at about 1:30 pm for a simple estimate to remove & replace my Bank 1-Sensor1 fuel/O2 sensor on my 2003 Lexus.
My "check engine light" had already been diagnosed as a bad B1S1 sensor at the dealership in Sacramento--just before I moved to Reno. Because I was short on cash at the time, and the technician said it could wait (just would have decreased mpg) I put this fix off for a few months.
So, I knew what the problem was before driving over for an estimate. But, I couldn't remember if it sensor 1 or sensor 2. I spoke with Pat Beardsley, and told him all of the above info, and that I couldn't recall whether it was B1S1 or B1S2. I asked him if could quickly just use the Check Engine Light Code Reader to confirm whether it was sensor 1 or sensor 2 ---(BTW--ANY auto parts store will do this for free), before giving me an estimate.
He insisted that they had to do a FULL check engine light diagnosis, which would cost $159, and that they'd need to keep my car for an entire day---PRIOR to even giving me an estimate. I thought that, perhaps, he didn't understand me...so I repeated what I wanted done: an estimate to remove and replace the fuel/air sensor--but that I just couldn't recall which sensor, please use the code reader. He repeated himself: $159 to diagnose, need the car all day, then we'll call you with an estimate.
What a joke! I immediately left, and went to O'Reilly's to have them throw the code reader on (FREE) so that I'd be reminded which sensor was bad. Sure enough it WAS Bank1/Sensor1. I ordered the part off of
for $86 and Sierra Car Care (on W. 7th) removed/replaced the sensor for $73. I ended up spending $159 for BOTH the part and labor, and now my car runs like a dream again.
The amount for the ENTIRE fix was equivalent to what Pat Beardsley at Greg's Garage wanted to sucker-me-in for JUST TO DIAGNOSE a problem that had already been diagnosed!
He could have just as easily said, "I can go ahead & use the code reader, and give you an estimate on replacing the sensor that the code reader diagnoses...but until we get the car in for repairs...this will be JUST an estimate."
By assuming that I was an idiot...Greg's Garage lost my business. Who's the idiot now?

I would leave 0 stars, if possible. They are so overpriced, it's borderline illegal. They are inconsiderate of time. Their diagnostic charges are insane and then they quote you way under what they charge. It's a miracle they're in business.

This company will scam you, I guarantee it. I brought my car in here and they created 10 times more problems so I brought it to Les Schwab for a second opinion and was told there was nothing wrong and Greg's did non of the work they charged me for. Save yourself the headache and bring your car somewhere else.

Broke down 30 miles outside of Reno last Tuesday. AAA drove us to Greg's about 5 o'clock it was the thermostat. They had us out and running the next day around 1:30. They looked pretty busy but were able to get us back on the road so we could get home. Problem later was a crack in the radiator not the thermostat. Filling the radiator got us home but broke down again the next week. Thorough inspection should have caught it. Disappointed.

I thought I would give these guys a chance since they were close to our apartment despite the negative reviews. Took our vehicle to have the horn hooked back up (was disconnected by the previous owner) and have the airbag light checked. They quoted us $2500-3000 to fix the horn and diagnose the airbag light issue but couldn't guarantee that would even fix the issues. The gentleman said his mechanics spent about 2.5 hours trying to diagnose the issue and their labor rate is $98/hr. So I ended up having to pay $250 just to diagnose the issues and run some digital inspections. Unbelievable. The funny thing is they talked to my wife initially and were going to charge $400+ (to diagnose the issues) but since she was at work I called them to figure out what was going on and they dropped the price to just the cost of the labor. This confirms another reviewers belief that they take advantage of women. And why did I pay anything you ask? They had me sign a paper when I dropped it off, and didn't give me a copy of what I signed so my hands were tied. Never again will I pay someone that much money for NOT doing any work. Just poor service

I lived in Reno for over 20 years and took all my cars to Greg's Garage. I now live in Houston and my daughter continues to take her car there as well. They have always given me great service at a fair price. I just called to arrange to send money to help my daughter's car get repaired and Greg not only remembered me be knows my daughter and pulled up her service order right away. I miss having someone I can trust to go to but I'm glad my daughter can still go to Greg's Garage. That makes me feel better since she is in Reno without family now. Take good care of my baby Greg

Called to get a quote on a tune up for my car. As i was speaking to advisor on phone I was reading reviews on this place on-line. Funny my quote kept getting higher and at one point my "courtesy" inspection went from no-charge to $70 something dollars but the hell of it all is as i was getting this quote i was reading reviews on how customers ended up paying more than what was expected. Ha. I passed.

More than happy with these guys. I was having issues with Reno Dodge as they had put new tires on my Van and after we drove away the Tire Senors went off saying that we had Zero tire pressure in one tire. I took it back to their service center and they charged me $120 to even check out the issue, anyways they told me it was going to be almost $650 as all of my sensors were out of batteries and needed to be replaced. WHAT??? I wasn't okay with that so I called Jeff at Greg's Garage and he told me that most likely the sensors needed to simply be reset. He asked that I bring it by and he would check it out for me for free. Turned out that "Whomever"=Reno Dodge had replaced my tires had damaged one of the sensors. Greg's Garage ended fixing the one sensor for $150 so that I wouldn't have to deal with Reno Dodge again. Anyways, glad for the quick resolution from a great company.

I started taking my vehicles to Greggs 8-10 years ago, I had been using a different repair shop in Sparks for several years. I had taken a car in for oil change, fluids, and filters. When I returned to pick my car up I was told they discovered a major transmission leak in some hose's & it was critical. I did not just fall off the turnip truck-I absolutely knew the car had no leaks of a critical nature! I paid for my maintenance and took car to Greg's telling them I wanted a basic overlook of vehicle. The charge was $72.00 (darn reasonable) that afternoon I picked up car and was told "NO MAJOR ISSUES" complete invoice of % brake left, rotation soon, all fluids in range and appeared clean, transmission fluid clean with no particles. I never mentioned the other shop or the reason I wanted my car checked. I have been taking all of my vehicles to Greg's since then 8-10 years. I work outdoors with mostly men that are into cars and trucks so when I take a car to a shop I'm pretty well informed of the possible issues. I have never felt cheated or over charged at Greg's. MOST OF ALL- after Greg's pinpoints the issue they are all about fixing it right the first time!!! NO monkey business, I've never once had to return due to an issue they repaired or a substandard part. If a part is bad they fix the part and the gaskets, bearings, belts, or lines that are required for the part to function properly. Personally I do not have time to return a car 3 times to a shop that try's to keep the bill low to get my business and replaces an alternator yet leaves the old ragged belts on- or replaces the only brake cylinder that is leaking knowing full well that the cylinder on the other side will start to leak soon and until then you will have uneven braking. I moved to California 2 years ago and I still drive to Reno and Greg's for work on my vehicles. The staff is courteous, the estimate is always correct or less than quote, and if I let them know my timeline in advance the work is finished in a timely manner. Oh yeah they actually return calls the very same day they agree to & the few times when I have been in a pinch they made it a priority so I would not miss any work.

a Rip Off. Way overcharged me for parts. Damaged my own parts and then said they were the wrong parts, so I could not turn them back for credit and Greg's did not allow for their destruction of my parts. The final bill came in a $425 over their estimate due to them padding their and marking up their parts some 200%. I left the vehicle based on an appointment and it sat for 2 days in the parking lot with no work being done. This as an old classic vehicle and not something you leave outside.
Good, honest, qualified mechanics are hard to find but you need to stay away from this one unless you like getting ripped off.

Awful! I took in my car and had the engine replaced, all seemed ok after I got it back until I drove up the street. My gas gauge and speedometer just stopped working. Took it back in assuming that they just didn't plug something back in tight enough and they tell me that it is my cars computer and that I need to pay over 300 dollars more to fix them. I agree to fix the speedometer for 100 and miraculously the gas gauge worked after I got it back... So either they did the 200 + dollar repair and didn't mention it at all or they just fixed what they originally forgot to plug back in. My best bet is on the 2nd...

Went to them because an engine light was on and I could not pass state inspection. This place is recommended by the state of NV for non-pass of inspection items. I knew my truck needed a new temperature gauge. I made the appointment the previous week to take it in the next Monday at 8:00am. I was told it would probably be done by that afternoon...well I did not see my truck again until late Wed. afternoon- and only after calling them 4 times with inquiries about my vehicle. First, they couldn't get to it- they were so busy- Huh? I made an appointment. Then they didn't have the part, so they had to call around to find it. Then it had to be shipped here. Then installed and finally the truck had to sit for a few hours so all of the "bubbles" were out of the coolant system. Three days without a vehicle. But what makes me the most mad- and the reason I will never take another vehicle to this place is that I was quoted a $15 re-inspection fee and $149 for thermometer and labor. I signed this paper. They did not give me a copy of this quote and I did not think to ask for one (my mistake). Even though I called 4 times, they never once discussed an increase in payment. I walked away paying $387- over $200 more than what was expected- and what could I do? They had already had my truck for 3 days! I couldn't let them keep it any longer. The man at the counter said the agreement I signed did not apply because that was for a "verification" of the problem and not the parts and labor or the re-inspection fee- What?
I have always taken this vehicle to the dealership- but thought I might save some money since financial experts say to use a garage after the vehicle is out of warranty...sorry- I will not ever do this again. It's back to the dealership for me. At least the work done and the quote given is what is in writing- or they call to ask if work needed is OK and they always have it ready when they say it will be ready.
I got screwed using this garage :-(

It is really unfortunate that Dave retired from this place.
My boyfriend and I have taken our vehicles (total of 5 between the two of us) here many times now. My most recent and last visit was about two weeks ago when I took my 09' Impreza down just for an inspection. I suspected my rack and pinion needing to be replaced. They confirmed those suspicions and charged me $114 for it.
I was at work so I asked if they can leave my keys in the car (this is the normal procedure for us) and I'd come pick it up with my spare keys after I got off. A guy named Jeff said, "That's fine, what's your CC number."
I said, "Okay, well what is the total first?" "$114"..."Does that include my AAA discount?"....."Oh, no...take $10 off that total then."...."Ok"
Turns out, he didn't take the $10 off my bill. It's petty, but that's not really the point, now is it? If a mechanic isn't honest or have any integrity, they really aren't worth my time or money.
Will never go there again. After the thousands of dollars we've given them, it never occurred to me that I was being taken to the cleaners, because Dave was always awesome to work with and, for the most part, they did a good job.

I have been to many mechanics in Reno and either received bad service or had to take my car back because of poor service. I had heard that Greg's Garage was a little expensive. However, I also hear many great things about them. I took my Jeep there and was treated like family. They fixed so many problems my car was having. Afterwards there was this noise that 3 other garages could not find. One of Greg's Garage mechanics heard the noise and instantly fixed it. My Jeep has never ran better. I will ALWAYS take my car back for service at this garage. Thank you for excellent service. Amazing quality.

This place is awful. These idiots know nothing about cars. They are the biggest rip off jokes around. Lazy and a bunch of liars that over charge people. PLEASE GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. that is unless you want to just give them your money for them to park your car in the back and have them do Nothing. I went in 1 time for a water leak and backfire and my car just wasn't running good at all. A day or 2 later they tell me everything is fixed. I go in I pay around 600$ I knew that was way too much, but I thought " well if it's fixed I'm happy and don't have to worry about it". I got about a block away and it's doing the same exact stuff and it's still leaking bad. I immediately stoped at a gas station, put water in my car. Drove right back to them and explained everything again to them. All they told me was " well your going to need carburetor work in the future. And they told me I could fix the leak myself. Because it was an easy fix. I was so pissed I just left. I called around and took it to a different mechanic. He fixed everything and replaced the carburetor for 300-400$. And after that everything was great. I hope people that are considering these idiots read this review and think twice and take there car to real mechanics. You will save time and money if you stay away from here.

These guys are a complete rip off. They charged us $75 dollars to GUESS what is wrong with my car. And then said, it could be this, or this, or this, and it may cost anywhere between $250 to $1000 on up. They were extremely rude to me. I will never refer anybody to these people

I had a very bizarre scenario happen with my car (electrical of course). I dropped my vehicle in the morning, unsure as to whether or not the problem would be found and fixed.
About 2 hours after I dropped it off, I got a phone call they they diagnosed the problem and estimated another 1.5 hours to fix it.
3 hours later I got another call. The problem was fixed and they EVEN fixed another fuze issue I was having. They said though it took them longer than they estimated to me, they WOULD NOT charge me more.
Yes their hourly rate is more expensive, but they know their s@!t, and are lightning fast.
I got my car back same day!! Can't beat that!
Thanks Dave for all the communication and amazing service!

Initially, I thought I was having transmission problems - it turned out I had 2 motor mounts cracked (one was computerized and hydraulic) and the throttle positioning sensor was out. Tim and the mechanics at Greg's were awesome! My car was ready when they said it would be and it ended up costing me significantly less then I thought it would. Additionally, Tim noticed on the test drive that my tires were shaky and they rotated them and smoothed out my ride. I cannot thank them enough for the great job they did and for Tim for communicating with me and overseeing my car repair.

I made an appointment to drop ...

I made an appointment to drop off my vehicle on a Thursday morning and I was told I had to drop it off between 7:30a and 8:00am. When I got there they told me that they wouldn't even be able to let me know what was wrong with my vehicle and give me an estimate until Monday. It's frustrating that I had to go out of my way to get my vehicle there at a certain time and that no one was up front about the time frame for an estimate. If I made an appointment for Thursday, why is my car sitting there until Monday? I will be finding some place else that knows the meaning of "appointment".

I dropped my car off at 8am for my scheduled appointment for a diagnostic test, and it STILL wasn't done over 7 hours later. I made an appointment so early because I, like them, have to work and didn't want to be waiting for my car by the time I had to leave for work. Smart planning, right? Wrong. Not only was I ridiculously late for work, but what the man told me they had worked on should have taken them less than 2 hours. I laughed at the absurdity of this service. I used to bring my car and husband's previous truck to Greg's Garage years ago when I lived closer to it but since I have moved I've gone to other auto repair shops. Not a happy camper with the other shops. My car never seems to be fixed "just right" like it used to at Greg's Garage. Recently I ended up driving across town to Greg's Garage again for the same repairs I needed when I brought car to other shops. Greg's Garage once again proved to be the only real competent auto repair shop because the first time I brought it to them it was fixed and now I have zero problems after several try's elsewhere.

I would try to fix my car myself before taking it here again!!! They were to fix the head gasket on our car. Two weeks later they told me it was done> I paid them IN FULL over 1200+. As I drove away, I noticed the car was jerking and sputtering when I accelerated. As I proceeded to get on the freeway, it continued to sputter and would not go over 40 miles an hour. When we returned it, they admitted that they could not get GOOD compression with the motor and the mechanic had ruinded the valves??? My husband was livid, "you sent my wife on the road with a car you knew was not running good" Their response was, Well, we fired the mechanic" ARE YOU kidding me YOU still ruined the engine!!.........They then said it would need a new motor and that they would fix it for no additional charge (gee..... that was BIG of them, since they ruined it !!) From the time they had started the job until they had put in the NEW engine was over 5 weeks. When we got the car back it would not start, and they told me I needed to buy a new battery from them.......I said, " I am not paying for one more thing from you" GREG himself inserted the battery, slammed my hood down started to walk away, and I said " are you done?"" He threw his hands in the air and walked away !!! Really??? I am suprised you are still in business.
