So far so good! I pass by Hillside everyday. My usual mechanic started to get lazy. Everyone who knows me is aware that Chuck/my 2003 Ford Ranger truck is my baby. So the moment the other mechanic told me that there is going to be a lot of work that is going to be done, it was time for me to find my baby a new doctor for yearly maintenance. Mechanics are in the profession to repair and fix cars right? I've been taking of Chuck for years and even though he's a senior citizen, he's a great truck! He's over 222,000 miles and 13 years old. Old Chuck is still going and he's getting better fairly soon so we can both go up to Mammoth and play throughout all 4 seasons.
Dave put him through a good and thorough physical and check up. We put Chuck on a good health plan and he filled out a prescription sheet. Everything I expected was on the medical record and all within my expected budget with labor and tax. My favorite part is that he called and emailed me to notify me of Chuck's status. EMAILED ME!!! Yeah!
So, Phase 1 for check up is a Check mark, Phase 2 and 3 to get him new boots (tires) and inhalers for his asthma is coming up next. I can't wait to update everyone on how things go.
Ladies, it felt so good to go in, get things taken care of, have my coffee, answer some emails and be assured that both Chuck and I will be taken care of. Stay tuned for the updates.

I desperately stopped in here after discovering I was moments away from a flat tire. The owner graciously took the time to inspect my tire, and he insisted on filling it up with air for me before recommending I head straight to a tire shop that he trusted.
Thank you so much for your compassionate service! I took your advice, and your trusted source took care of me right away. I will be returning to Hillside for any future auto needs just based off of this experience alone!

So the customer service is amazing! The owners wife puts alot of time in making sure that while you wait you are fed and have some good coffee. The other workers are very nice and hospitable as well. The only thing I can say is that it is a little pricey but you get what you pay for. I had an issue with my car after they fixed it and they did whatever they could to make my car run great again free of charge. They even gave me a rental for free. I would suggest this place to anyone needed their car fixed. Awesome work!

I live in Washington state but was stuck in LA with a blown out transmission cooling line in my 1994 Chevy Astro Van. AAA towed me in, and Hillside tackled the difficult job of finding out why it happened and getting me back on the road home. Hillside Auto Repair was a great place to end up in that situation. Friendly people and good communication during the process. I would recommend Hillside to folks that live in that area for all their auto maintenance and repair needs.

I took my Chevy Tahoe in to replace the waterpump. I was given a ride home and also picked from my home. They are all very friendly and courteous. Truck runs great and they even gave it a much needed bath. I also received a followup call a week later. I highly recommend them.

Used Hillside recently for my sons 2012 Ford Escape. Needed an oil change, simple drop off and pick up work done and vehicle clean, that was a wonderful surprise! I've used them in the past for our previous Honda Civic and have been very satisfied with the service and fair pricing. It's nice to have a local repair in the neighborhood you can trust.

Dave,
You are in denial:
1) People expect to get genuine Toyota parts not "OEM spec" as you have mentioned from our discussion. Yes you have replaced the same Denso spark plugs that Toyota uses but the ignition coils are NOT genuine Toyota parts since it doesn't have the Toyota brand on it. Whatever you would want to believe how your ignition coil is "OEM", at the end of the day, Toyota does not use unbranded Toyota ignition coils so customers expect to receive the same EXACT parts that Toyota uses.
2) Per our discussion with Andre over the phone, Andre admittedly based his calculation on what he thought he heard right of "$680 + tax" NOT the correct amount of $608 + tax that I said. Still at $680 + tax the total amount does not amount to $702!Don't try to blame the computer or the books on this one for giving out the incorrect price!
3) Customers expect to get honest pricing the first time they ask for a quote not after when a customer shops around and finds out your price is double than what the Toyota dealer charges.
4) I could have saved myself the $656 that you've charged me if your mechanic did not misdiagnosed the issue. Right off the bat Toyota knew what was wrong with my car and have advised me of the bigger issue rather than what your shop "THINK" that might be the problem. I wouldn't have your shop repair my car if they knew the bigger issue will cost me $5k to fix.
5) You asked me what will it take for me to change my review on yelp so I said I want my money back! I think it's just fair to get my money back since your shop failed to diagnose the real issue of my car. Again, I wouldn't have had your shop fix my car in the first place if they knew right off the bat what the real issue was and will cost $5k to fix!!
Don't be in denial my friend. Your customers' experience don't lie. There's a reason why you have such low rating on yelp!

Thanks Dave for your response but I never mentioned anything to your employees about my financial situation. The fact that we figured out I was being overcharged $180 doesn't mean I couldn't afford what you were trying to charge me. My boyfriend has extensive knowledge about automobiles and the cost of fixing them. Had my van not broke down where it did, my boyfriend would have fixed it for free. He is the one that noticed you were overcharging for a part, not labor. (Labor was industry standard) I can understand an up sell on a part of $20-$40 but $180 is out of this world. Once again, this has nothing to do with my financial situation and I'm not sure why you or your employees judged me that way when I had a nice business van and my own business. I have to agree with the other reviews. People expect to get a fair price from the beginning, not after arguing or researching. I don't appreciate being portrayed as a needy person needing compassion, discounts, or handouts. In your attempt at an apology, it comes off more as an insult and defensiveness. A simple, "We are reviewing our pricing and working on becoming a more reliably fairer priced business" would have sufficed instead of a complete LIE.

We've had our car repaired several times at Hillside, and every time has been a great experience. What finally led us to write a review for Yelp was what happened this week. Our car died - leaking fuel everywhere. After having it towed to Hillside, Mike and the crew let us know it really wasn't worth fixing. They went out of their way to help us, and we appreciated their honesty and kindness. Highly recommended!!

I have been to 100's of Mechanics in my lifetime and these guys are some of the best I have ever been to. I Brought my cars to them 7 times over the last 2 years and am absolutely impressed with service and prices and never being pushed into doing a repair that isn't really needed. Always able to get me in quick and give a ride home right away if needed.

I'm in love with this place. From the friendly atmosphere, the homemade treats for while you wait, all of the testimonials placed on the table.. Lets just say I had a pretty good vibe walking into this place.
Back Story - The Low Oil light came on in my Audi. I checked it and the dip stick was bone dry. I went to O'Riley to buy some oil (wasn't leaking - I think I burn a little oil - nothing new in German cars). My TT takes about 6.5 quarts of oil so I purchased 4 quarts total. I put three quarts in and checked the dip stick and I overfilled it by accident. I know not to drive will excess oil because you can ruin the catalytic converter and even flood the cylinders among other things. I called a near by Valvoline to see if they can drain out some oil for me. Liability purposes, they could not. It was about two miles from me so I just decided to get an oil change. They couldn't do that because my car was too low for the little tracks I have to drive over.
I was desperate so I took it to a Mum & Pop Jaguar repair shop. The owner wasn't there so they didn't want to help me. He referred me to Hillside which was across the street and said if they cant help you, come back.
Went to hillside, probably was there about 20 minutes. They immediately took in my car to take a look and siphoned out the access oil, didn't charge a thing, and sent me on my way. I think I found my new repair shop!
Also noticed on their business cards, it states they will bring you home if need be!

An update to my review - it's still 5 star, and still astonished that anyone could say otherwise. Friendly, competent, and very customer-service oriented.
My original review: i don't know why there are so many low reviews. I've been here a number of times over the last ten years and always, always gotten top notch service. They do what they say, keep their promises, and every time I've shopped around for price, they have come up the lowest or close to it. I've never had a repair go wrong or felt mistreated.
Over the years, there were plenty of opportunities for them to rack up extra charges, but they never did. Plus they are nice and clean your car up when they finish. And they send coupons in the mail and thank you notes.

First, I think the name in Yelp is outdated, this is the website for the Hillside Auto Repair at that address:
. My experience with this shop is that they are pleasant to work with, honest, fairly priced, and stand behind their work. They warranty the work they do and if you are not happy with it the first time, they will do what needs to be done until it is right. I don't think you can ask more from an auto shop.

I have been a customer of Hillside for years and continue to be impressed by their customer service, attention to detail and prompt service. Mike and Andre are so friendly whether it's on the phone or in person, and very patient in walking me through the service issues with my Honda Accord. I instantly feel at ease and trustworthy of the staff at Hillside. It's a pleasant experience taking my car in for service, which is not always the case with other auto repair shops!

I visited Hillside to have some repairs done to my truck. Right from the start the service staff were super friendly and they gave me a feeling that I could trust what they told me. They diagnosed the issue (bad clutch) and gave me a great price, and I even double checked against some other local shops.
In addition to the great service I was pleasantly surprised at how nice/clean the convenience shop was and the wide range of quality wines they carried. I'll definitely be stopping by more often for a fill up and a few bottles!

If I could give Hillside Auto zero (0) stars I would! Terrible place of business and service. Shame on you Dave, Mike and the rest of the gang!
They completely ripped me off. They damaged my car with a transmission flush by putting in low grade oil or some type of substance into my transmission. It was NOT transmission oil, this was confirmed by Scott Robinson Honda.
After several months of my car violently shaking while I was driving, and after several months of going back-and-forth to have them recheck the work they did on my car, the only thing that resulted was more shaking and more money I paid for work I did not need!
I finally went to Scott Robinson Honda and within 5 minutes the mechanic found some type of "gear oil" in my transmission. Dave the owner of Hillside Auto told me that I needed to bring the oil back to him and have it checked. NO WAY! I didn't trust him or anyone at his shop to check my car ever again.
He even left me a voicemail saying he would "fix" whatever was wrong and make it right. Long story short, the only fix he did was pay for my transmission fluid work at Honda, as he never reimbursed me for ALL of the unnecessary work he did on my car.
Next time you drive by Hillside Auto, my STRONG recommendation is to keep driving by! I filed a complaint with AAA. For anyone having the same or worse situation, I highly recommend filing a claim with AAA.

I brought a used car in that I was looking to purchase. I got a AAP used car inspection, the inspection was very thorough and checked everything in the vehicle and took a look under the vehicle to check for leaks and inspect everything. I worked with Andre he was very polite and courties, the inspection only cost $89 and it took just under 3 hours, the business was very clean and the staff was also clean and professional looking. I would recommend this place if you are looking to buy a used car and need an inspection for a warm and fuzzy before buying a used car.

worst place i have ever gone completely took advantage of me so I'm just going to copy and paste my review i posted on the mechanic who saved the day for me after these guys ripped me off on another lever but wrote a really great review on their page including what i went thru with these guys so hopefully it makes sense when i just copy and paste it since i don't feel lie writing any more lolol ! ......
i am literally obsesses with these guys, everyone knows that mechanics are just that one job thats always tying to screw you over, and that recently happened to me at another shop that i want to give negative stars to them and add way more than 5 for these guys, but I'm a walking target for those kinda people seeing as i have absolutely no idea whats what (i didn't even know how to open the hood of my car if that helps a bit lolol) well i went to hillside auto about 4-5 months ago bc my car broke down, and still being new to torrance i haven't found a mechanic out here I've gone to yet, so i trusted AAA and their recommendation well that was a bad idea, and my car didn't run so it wasn't like i could shop around, my bill was about $2700!!! i think it was $1500 they charged for labor, unbelievable, and they kept my car forever! anyways 4 months go by and my car feels like its about to break down again, I'm thinking its the same problem so it should be covered under the warranty, but nope they wanted another $1600 from me, i couldn't believe it so i checked out yelp and saw my new favorite people over at hiro, brought them the bill from before as well as the estimate from the other shop and told them the situation, and these guys basically when all said and done 2 visits (first visit cost i think $120, and that was going to make sure my car didn't break down on me, the second visit was $300 something, so total was $400 something to take care of everything and they get the job done fast got my car back the very next day, but what i would love to know from hillside is where the hell that extra $1200 was going i am just so blown away with what a shitty place they are and i just cant tell you how refreshing it was to find a place like hiro especially with the level those other guys were taking advantage (when i googled the services and the prices for what they did on the $2700 i think the most expensive price i saw had paid was still $6-700 less than what they charged me, i mean those guys are a joke and i will be putting this review on their page too, but they charge people $154 right off the bat just to see what is wrong with the car, like wtf do they think people just swim in money or something ? unbelievable, so to sum everything up NEVER GO TO HILLSIDE AND ALWAYYYYYSSSS GO TO HIRO YOU WILL LOVE THEM BEST MECHANIC I HAVE EVER BEEN TO IN MY LIFE

For gasoline and a soda, fine... they have one of the few air pumps in the area that not only works but can be set so it stops at the correct (we hope) pressure. I like being able to pump gas without some idiot television screaming at me over the sound of traffic. The guys at the concession part are usually polite and helpful. It is a very safe place to stop late at night, prices very competitive for fuel.
For service...
Some years ago I somehow lost oil from my engine and the engine burned. I had the car towed to Hillside for service. Should have taken a couple days... a week and a half later the car was still sitting on the lot, untouched (me paying for a rental), all the innards disassembled on a plastic sheet on carpet at the front passenger side. One of the service managers told me the shop that was supposed to re-bore (?) the engine block was not keeping up with the work.
I started to fuss and eventually the work was finished.
I had no end of problems with the car after that, it had run perfectly before.
When I noticed a significant oil leak I was told the "old seals leak when they are taken out and the put back in. Sometimes they tear....". I asked them why, when the car was apart, they had not used new seals to reassemble it... the answer... wait for it....
was that I had not asked for new seals.
I've had mechanics who when, they are doing work will say, like, "while we have this apart I'd suggest you do the water pump (or timing chain).... most of the expense of that service is the time involved in getting to it and you are past the time usually recommended for that service...." (I don't rack up the miles but parts get old from time too). I'm not a mechanic, I appreciate the mechanics keeping track of what needs to be done, and appreciate them being honest. Easy enough these days to look these things up.
I complained to Hillside about a big oil stain on the carpet at the passenger side, Hillside said they had nothing to do with that... I told them I had seen the engine parts resting there on a sheet of plastic, they argued. Eventually I called in Auto Club, they did nothing, when I told the story of the repair delay, Hillside's manager "got in my face" angry, saying it was not true (then why did it take over two weeks?). When I pointed out the damaged carpet, they denied any responsibility but "offered" to clean it for me. They steamed the carpet and got it cleaner, but the extreme steaming caused the carpet to fall apart at that section the next year.
The Auto Club guy and the owner seemed to be good friends, nothing I complained about was addresses. I was really disappointed, I'd hoped for more fair treatment.
Like a fool I kept going back hoping they would get it right, the engine never ran right, I even let them replace a "c" boot (?) they said was torn.
Eventually I tried Torrance motors when I developed a problem with mysterious stalling no one could figure out (me paying for each different shop to "not" fix the problem).
Mark at Torrance motors figured it out right away and guess what, the problem was caused by an oil leak from a torn seal, oil dripping on the spark plugs. And when he showed me the torn "c" boot... the same one supposedly replaced...
Mark was uncomfortable when I asked if they should crack "again' in less than a year... uh huh.
He got it running well but told me the carburetor had been damaged... and two years later the engine burned again (frozen piston). Mark rebuilt it in two days and this one was working perfectly when I sold the car 8 years later.

Really nice guys...but only a place to get work done if you have a FAT WALLET!! Something as simple as battery replacement was over priced by 70.00for a standard Interstate battery as compared to every other local auto business for the exact same battery...and he had to order it!. If your wealthy, it's a nice clean garage.

Great service! I brought my Jeep Wrangler in to have the turn light and brake light replaced. The car was ready for pick up when advertised and the price was very reasonable. What impressed me was that they without asking offered if I needed a ride anywhere. The fact that they offered this saved my wife from having to come and get me. The owner, Dave, was the one that gave me the ride. What a nice guy! When the car was ready they had even washed it without having been asked. I will be back for 100% sure. Thanks to Dave and the team at Hillside.

They consistently exceed my expectations, and cost less than the dealer. There are repair shops that charge less, but they also deliver less. I started at Hillside when there was a problem with my Mercedes that the dealer couldn't fix. Hillside found and fixed the problem, and gave me a one-year warranty (the dealer gives 90 days).
Now I've taken four of my cars to them, and only ever had one complaint -- and as soon as I mentioned it, they fixed it. The owner even calls a few days after repair to make sure everything is good. I take all my cars to Hillside now, and I have never been sorry!

For 4 years, since I bought my car at Santa Monica Subaru, I've been taking it there for service, i.e., per their maintenance schedule. Recently, SM Subaru shut down without warning, leaving me high and dry, not cool.
But....as it turns out, it was a blessing in disguise. A Yelp search brought me to Hillside Automotive. I read that they've been voted South Bay's Best Auto Repair Shop.....3 years in a row! Wow. And it's a 10-15 minute drive from my home, as opposed to going all the way to SaMo.
Life is good! hahaha
So yesterday I met Dave Carney, the owner (see photos). My car needed brakes (I kinda knew that) and Dave explained all about brakes to me, all the technical stuff I never knew. I ate muffins in the waiting room, that had been baked by his wife, as my car's condition was assessed.....and that waiting area is as cute as the previous reviewer described (see photos). The ladies room....just as cute! Haha, I took a picture of it.
As I was waiting, I opted to move outside with my book, to the patio under a vine-covered trellis, next to the sweetly-landscaped rock garden/fountain. How peaceful & lovely. Most impressive was the thoughtful care that went into assuring the customer's comfort. Much appreciated by me, and all too rare these days.
I cannot say enough good stuff about the efficiency & friendliness & personal attention I received at Hillside Auto. My car needed attention in a few areas, as it turned out, and I knew I was in good hands.
It's another Yelp success story.
I decided to rent a car, as my car had to remain overnight. Enterprise will be my next review, haha! And I was delighted to get a call from the repair shop at 10am this morning to tell me my car was all ready! I was shocked they had done the job so quickly. They told me they were aware I had a car rental and had tried to keep it within the one-day time limit! Where you gonna find service like that?!
So I picked up my car ahead of schedule. It was all clean, they had washed it! (And they did a better job than the carwash, haha.) My old parts that had been replaced were in a plastic bag waiting for me, in case I wanted to keep them.
I met Dave's wife, the lady who bakes the muffins! She let me take her photo!
I was delighted to learn they had fixed my broken seat belt, just as a courtesy. My car had been test-driven by 3 different people, to make sure it was OK. In fact, it runs so quiet now I can't even hear the engine. I don't think it ran this smooth when it was brand new.
So...thank you, Mr. & Mrs. Carney and staff for operating an honest, reputable business. What a joy to experience such fine service. It's my pleasure to give you this much-deserved shout (on Yelp, the website you had never heard of until today, when I brought you a Yelp pen....hahaha...)
See ya when the next oil change is due!
Update: 6/20
As all customers of Hillside Auto do, I got a thank-you note in the mail today. This is in addition to the follow-up call from the owner, just to see if everything was well and good after my repair work was done.
And I have discovered yet another wonderful surprise about my car....
the stereo speakers seem to be working in stereo, which they never did before. Or maybe it's just that the car runs so quiet I can hear them now? I dunno, but it's great.

Been coming here my whole driving career, for the most part. I think I am finally ready to cut the chord though. These guys, although they provide outstanding work, charge way too much. It's not even overpriced, at times it's just WOW! I'm basically giving my money away. Dave Carney himself gave me a breakdown of why they charge so much for checking the engine light, and yes, te best equipment costs money, but I drive a Honda not a Beamer, Benz, or Bentley. I shouldn't have to pay hand over fist, $160, for a check engine light. Oil change just under $50, I'll live with, but after years of giving them service I have to pray there is something better out there.

Two things on this place.
First visit - AAA has a special with the AAA-approved repair shops. Discount on oil change and full inspection. $39 if I remember right, so not that special but thought I would try it since I've seen this shop on my way home from work. BUT I was told they already had done as many specials as they would since they weren't making enough money on them.
2nd visit - I wake up in the morning to find a lot of oil on the driveway. Now my 20 year old truck has 100k miles so a few drips now and then was normal but this was a lot. Took the truck over there and left it. Got a phone call shortly later that "it was hemorrhaging from all over the place". $1500 to fix or $3000 for a rebuilt engine. No thanks, I'll pick up the truck and pay them the $99 for the inspection. After taking the truck home and climbing underneath to see where it was bleeding profusely, I tightend up the oil filter and have had no problems since...
Now I'm thinking that they were not interested in giving me the $39 inspection because if I drive a truck like that, then I can't afford to bring them my truck for repairs, and that was their way of telling me to go away.

First, I've worked in car shops and have several relatives who either own car repair shops or have been involved in the car business for their whole lives. So I know a little about how it can work, pro and con.
I was visiting relatives in the area some time ago and needed some diagnostic work done on my Jetta as the little engine light was on. My relatives know and swear by Dave, so I agreed to take my car there. But I didn't talk to Dave. Mike handled my car. I knew generally what the problem was and just wanted confirmation as I was leaving the next day for Colorado and didn't want to take unnecessary chances. Mike charged me a lot for the computer readout, then called and said, with great urgency and emotion in his voice, that he has really bad news - my car needs a $2000 fix (a new computer) and is not fit to drive to Colorado. I was stunned (I was out of work at the time and not flush with cash in any way). I told him I'd get back to him, then called my mechanic in CO, told him what had been diagnosed and what Mike recommended.
Long story short - my mechanic told me it was all a bunch of BS and I should RUN from that shop. So I went over to see Mike and told him, No Thanks, I don't believe I need to spend $2000. He hemmed and hawed, then said, after re-thinking it, he thinks it will be OK for me to drive to Colorado. No big deal. Gee, thanks for telling me.
Bottom line - Mike is your stereotypical rip-off artist. He's lazy and doesn't do the work. 5 minutes online would have told him my problem wasn't serious. Instead he tried for the quick score.
Dave might indeed be a great guy. But stay away from Mike. (Just so you know, many months later that light is still on, with no problems. Turns out its common on these cars. Thanks Mike.)

I have been by Hillside Auto a number of times and each time my experience has been good. On each occasion, the quality has never been an issue, the staff have been professional and the work done in the prescribed time. My only issue is the price. They charge more than any other repair shop that I know of in the South Bay. I recently had a light bulb changed. The itemized billing showed the part cost under $3 and the labor over $50....for changing a light bulb. So when I read what others have been changed for routine service it really doesn't surprise me. In this day in age people EXPECT quality and people EXPECT professionalism but people don't EXPECT to be ripped off. I am certainly never going back for that one simple reason. Stop ripping off your customers!

It's rare to find a place where people are honest and give service. This is the place! I came here for general check up and tire rotation and I couldn't have been more impressed with the customer service. I'm glad I finally found a place to take my car.

I went to Hillside Auto last week. They couldn't have been more helpful. Great service at a great price. 'Mike' called after my car was repaired to see how it was driving. Hillside Auto is my new go-to service shop.

This is a reasonably competent shop, but repairs can be expensive because they absolutely refuse to install perfectly good aftermarket parts.
Don't even think about asking them to install high performance brakes, for example. If they do your brakes, you'll be stuck with inferior OEM parts.

I've been going to Hillside Auto Repair for approximately 10 years and will not go anywhere else. I have never written a review before, but feel strongly about this auto repair shop. This shop will do the best job it can to take care of you. It may cost more, but you get what you pay for. I pay for knowledge, safety and courtesy.
My daughter was in town for the Easter holiday weekend, a busy time at Hillside, and needed service on her car. I called on Saturday morning, got the car to Hillside Auto Repair by 9:00am. Mike called me by 10:15am, told me it needed front brakes and rotors, clean up the rear brakes and a new filter and fluid for the air conditioner. He had already changed the oil. Oh, and it needed 4 new tires. To make a long story short, they did all the work (except new tires) and had the car back to us by 3:00pm. I'd say they did a great job of squeezing me in! And of course it was washed too!
All of this is not extraordinary for Hillside Auto Repair. I feel they "save my life", figuratively and literally, when they take such personal care of my cars. But this time they did more. They took care of my daughter before she headed up to northern California and help educate her about her car for the future.
The service is personal. I am always greeted warmly and the staff knows me. The employees are trustworthy and helpful. I am able to make informed decisions from their helpful diagnosis.
I am so very thankful to have found an honest automotive shop that cares so much for it's customers.

My truck needed the front rotors turned. I had personally changed the pads within the last year so I knew that the vibrations were from the rotors. When I spoke with them in passing while getting propane, they said it would cost me a "couple hundred bucks" to fix.
So I took the truck in. I asked for them to just turn the rotors. On the way out I asked "how much it will cost to turn the rotors?" I was told, "we will have to look and them and run them out". I again asked stating they must have a standard cost for this? He then rattled off some numbers that didn't make sense. I should have known but my ride was waiting out front and I felt pressure to leave.
Next day. I get a call that I need new rotors, and pads in the front.
Tire rotoation
broken window switch (just the switch)
front rotors
front pads
$800!!
I said no thanks paid the $60 brake inspection fee, picked it up and curious, I did the repairs myself. Rotors just needed to be turn and the pads were at 50%. This is theft. The same as if I took that money out of their cash register.
Yeah they have free wi fi and the have a water fountain. Beware.
So on Thanksgiving my wife's 90 year old grand mother and grandfather came over. He begins to tell me a very similiar story but with getting his truck to pass a smog check. They again wanted $800. He picked it up, figured out what was wrong and went to Ford and bought the $69 part. He passed the smog test saving over $700.
We both laughed that we both avoided giving them a ton of cash. Modivated me to post. We both delt with Mike.

This auto repair place charged me $250 dollars for a $69 dollar part. When I called to speak to the owner it took him two wks to return my call. He denied I was overcharged & when I told him the dealership he bought the part from told me the real price, he claimed they lied. I went to the dealership & had them to print out a invoice for me. They also charged me $250 for labor. I later found out it takes about 15 minutes max to change that particular part. Its my fault for trusting those crooks. Since then I have done all of my own maintenance.

Last Sept., 2007, I initially tried to make an online appointment for an oil change, but when I didn't receive a confirmation like I was supposed to, I called super early, like 7:30 a.m.-ish to see if I could get in. They asked if I could be there in about an hour, so off I went.
Free wi-fi
Clean & cutely decorated waiting room and outdoor patio if you want fresh air
Complimentary water bottles, coffee, croissants
Complimentary ride to wherever you want to go after you drop off your car. Don't know what the maximum miles radius is.
Cleanest, cutest ladies restroom I've ever seen at an Auto Repair shop.
Includes free car wash.
I was in and out in about an hour
Voted "Best Independent Repair Shop 2005-2007!" in the local newspaper
Received a "Thank You" note via snail mail AND a "Thank You" phone call from the owner himself a few days afterwards
I would have taken -1 because the manager acknowledged that their online appointment system was down, but I'll give it back because he fit me in on short notice on a Saturday a.m.
-1 because price quoted on new customer coupon (
) didn't factor in tax and waste disposal fee. I KNOW those are a given for any oil change, but still would like it all spelled out because there was a difference between the initial quote on the New Customer coupon ($17.95) used to lure you in and the final grand total. The calculation was weird (I'm not saying shady, though). Here's what my receipt says...
- $10.07 (coupon)
$14.74 (Fram Oil Filter)
$13.28 (Chevron 10w30 Motor Oil)
$3.00 (Hazardous Waste)
$20.95 (Subtotal)
$2.31 (Tax)
$23.27 (Grand Total)
Still overall a much more pleasant experience than the local EZ Lube, and I did get a complimentary car wash.

I took my car for a small repair because I like their oil change service and waiting area. A big mistake. I thought they would charge a reasonable price for the repair but I was wrong. I don't know much about car and car repairs and what they charged me 50% more than the norm based on Internet research. I wish I did the research before agreeing to their estimate. When your car is in their shop and you are in a hurry to get it fixed, one does not necessarily have the presence of mind to this. I thought they would be the auto-repair shop that I could trust and take my car to. The car was fixed but I seriously cannot recommend this repair shop to anyone.

I have been getting my cars fixed here for years and have never had a problem. The staff is service oriented and will do whatever it takes to help the customer. The owner, Dave Carney, is a wonderful man himself. If you take your car in early you will have the chance to have some homemade treats made by his wife in the office. Wonderful service, and I would recomend this to anyone. Best service in town!

Dave Carney's Hillside Automotive is the best automotive shop I have ever been to!
I moved to the LA area and bought my first car ever about 3 years ago.
Demetrios and Mike answer all of the crazy questions of a first time car owner with patience and adjust the detail of their answers to my knowledge level. I had been to a couple other shops for routine service and treated with disdain when asking questions, so I know the difference.
Demetrios and Mike are always willing to offer service suggestions taking into consideration the typical mileage stuff, my driving habits and especially my budget!
The shop is always clean and I love the snacks and drinks available when waiting. (The soap in the ladies room is from Restoration Hardware, when was the last time you saw that kind attention to detail at an auto shop!)
Everyone in the shop is very polite and makes it easy for a girl like me to feel comfortable with my automotive needs. It is also a great bonus that my car is clean every time I pick it up!
I highly recommend Hillside for all your automotive needs.

I drove my car into the shop because i could hear and feel i had wheel problems. I was shown the problem which was serious and giving an estimate as to what the charges would be. I decided that it would be better to buy a new car than to invest in this car. I was advised to get my car towed back to my place do to the severity of three problem. They waived the $65 for going through my car and checking to find the problem. I appreciated their professionalism.

Impressed

I brought my car in for some brake repairs. A very nice gentleman, Mike, told me my back brakes did not need to be replaced. He also said, on a side note, I may want to think about getting another car soon because my car was using oil. He recommended I trade the car in before my engine was ruined. I received a follow up call regarding my service as well as a card in the mail thanking me for being a customer. I definitely recommend this auto repair shop

Arrogant personnel

When tried to ask few very simple questions about very simple estimate, I end up getting very arrogant feedback over the phone from guy called Mike or Michael. It was impossible to get any estimate from him for anything without bringing the car in the shop so he can "see the car" first. I told him that I even have a paperwork from another repair place showing what needs to be repaired. I just need a quote how much Hillside will charge for something like that. Very simple question! Bottom line is he was trying to convince me that he need to re-check my car again - obviously charge me for that service and then try to give me an estimate. So instead of spending one day for simple part replacement I would have to go thru schedule/possible re-test (one day) and try to fix it in one day possible two days (day two & three!) !!!! Cmon it's not like you never worked on the cars before and you are not sure how long is going to take you to replace something without looking at the car first. I also have to mention that arrogant Mike never even offered another option or suggested any other way to help me. He was acting like a "arrogant broken record"...and all this from service that is South Bay's best (in what? being arrogant?)...WARNING! please stay away from this place. I'm not sure why is telling someone over the phone an estimate is such a big deal suddenly? Thank god for other friendly auto repair places! I'm going to stay away from this establishment and I'm telling to all my friends too!

I give them 2 thumbs up, 5 stars, with full honors. Moved here from NJ 3 yrs ago. In NJ I had a place to take all my cars for 15 yrs. Finallay after 2 yrs Here LA I finally found a place, Hillside Auto is aplace that I can trust to take my cars again. We raced my wife's cobra into the ground where it was not fun to drive anymore. After bouncing around for a yr or so they got the car up and running again like new. Even something they don't do there, their recommendation worked out extremely well. I won't even think about going somewhere else.

- LelaLilo
