Came in for a routine OBD2 Star Smog check. They're just a small shop and they would ask you to pull your vehicle around to the back and drive it up to the dyno.
The person doing the smog seemed to be preoccupied with something else or another vehicle and frequently paused while doing the job. He also didn't seem welcoming for a customer like me to make use of his business.
While the smog process went without a hitch as my vehicle passed, I take off a star because it seemed like he didn't place as much importance to the job at hand. Other smog shops are more welcoming and do the job right away.

No appointment needed in my case. Showed up at 1:15pm and was out at 1:45pm. Convenient, fair price ($45) and a friendly mechanic.
Be aware that there wasn't much of a reception desk, I had to poke around to find someone to help me, but after I got a hold of someone, they took care of me immediately.

I called this company after discovering that I needed to have a smog check done quickly. They were very prompt in scheduling me in, and I barely had time to answer a few emails before I found out that they had completed the work.
When I questioned the mechanic about paperwork processing time and interacting with the DMV, he was very knowledgeable and provided me with the information I needed.

I called Saturday morning to see if I needed an appointment for a smog check. I was told I could just come by, no problem! When I came I was promptly received and they started working on my car immediately.
I think communication was a little lacking. I walked through the front and was told to bring my car back. Once I got there I got out of the car and they started working on it. No one really told me if I would pay before...after. Or how many minutes it would take, if I could go for a walk... Honestly I'm not complaining though.
Because the smog check was only $45 (no fee for using a card or anything!) I only waited about 15 minutes and everything was finished. Quick and painless, the way I like it.

I've been exempt from Smog checks for a few years so I was blown away by what done shops are charging for them now. I'm so glad I found Bake Smog Center. Oscar doesn't seem to be much of a talker but I'll be damned if they weren't quick and cheap. $45 out the door (small car) including certification in about 15 minutes.

Just went here this afternoon for a SMOG check and I was in and out in less than 30 min! Super convenient and quick and it was just $45 for my 2006 Toyota Corolla.
I actually went here back in 2011 and it was $40 then. Two years ago I went to Bake Auto Care thinking it was the same place and ended up paying $68! So happy to see it only went up by $5 in 4 years - it's still cheaper than what I paid 2 years ago.

The Biennial ritual for every vehicle owners (4+ years) in CA.......if it goes well good...if not...it's a living nightmare....I'd rather pay for a fat stripper to give me a lap dance than to go through that nightmare....well....Bake Smog Center relieved it.
SHORT STORY
Fast and decent pricing. Failed smog test at a test-only center...Simply put, the oxygen sensor was working just enough to run the car....but not good enough to pass the California smog test....left the car around noon and was done(diagnostics, repair, smog test) and out with everything by 3PM. Oscar kicks ass.
LONG STORY
So.....I go for my biennial smog test and fail. The reason? The "drive cycle" wasn't ready.
Apparently, every car has this "drive cycle" and is different by every car.....it has a list of check monitors it needs to pass so that a "drive cycle" is complete, and the car can get smog tested.
I failed that shit (the smog test) because the drive cycle wasn't "complete". It was the "O2 sensor heater (not the O2 sensor)" that did not check. It was because of that one stupid shit (O2 sensor heater) not checking, I was guaranteed a smog test "fail".
All the other places that I went told me to drive it around more.....and that shit (the O2 sensor heater) will eventually kick in - I drove to LA, Brea, locally.....and already I drove over 600+ miles....and this shit(O2 sensor heater) still didn't kick in.....a few weeks passed of doing this shit (the purposeless driving)..and it still didn't kick in.
Out of hope, I found Bake Smog Center, where Oscar told me he would have to do a diagnostic on it to find out exactly that shit (the problem) was. He ran the test on the Dyno-thingy, and told me that shit (O2 sensor) was lazy...which did not make that O2 sensor heater check.....meaning it worked enough to operate the car, but not pass the test.......so I opted to have the thing replaced.....and it was done...
......it just felt good to get this shit (the whole thingy) done.....

If you want a quick and no-hassle smog, this is your place. Instead of the front entrance, its easier to bring your vehicle around to the back garage entrance (through the middle "alley"). I usually just drop the car off, go get lunch around the corner, and its done when I get back. $45, easy-peasy.

I came here on my lunch break to take care of what I am sure we all feel is the biggest pain. The guy took me right away and I was in and out within 30 minutes. It doesn't hurt that I passed either. Definitely as painless as a smog check could be. The place is also close to one of my favorite poke places, so I was able to grab a quick bite to eat and still be back to the office in under than an hour. I am so happy I found this gem!

Ah the smog check. One of the many joys of registering vehicles in California.
Among the many, many smog check facilities, Bake Smog Center is a standout. Yelp didn't steer me wrong with all of the 5 star reviews. The location can be a little tricky to find (the business complex is set up kind of like a maze), but well worth the effort.
Oscar and his entire team are friendly and efficient. I brought in two vehicles on different days - while appointments are not required, I did call ahead and neither visit took longer than 20 minutes.
Things to know:
- The storefront is the waiting area - you will need to drive around to the bay in the back of the building for smog service, and your car will be returned to you at the front.
- If your vehicle is already registered in CA, they will send the smog test results electronically to the DMV - no paper certificate to worry about.
- There is a small discount for cash payment.

I own a 2002 Chevy Silverado with 215,000 miles on it and it is my trusted daily commuter as well as my boat towing vehicle. This truck hauls my boat, my wife AND the kitchen sink she packs into it...up the Cajon Pass with ease and across the desert regularly to the river and back. It has NEVER failed me nor left me on the side of the road. I am meticulous about maintenance and used to get it serviced at Goodyear....But it sprang an oil leak. A bad oil leak and Goodyear wanted $1,800.00 to replace the rear main seal! I was freaked out. My buddy told me to go see Oscar at Bake Smog. Oscar said $800.00 and GUARANTEED to fix the leak. I didn't believe him but took the leap of faith. Oscar was true to his word; fixed the leak sent the driveshaft out for rebuild as well for a few dollars more and I got my truck back running smoother than when it was new and trust me I look underneath everyday and NO LEAKS whatsoever....couldn't say enough about Oscar and Bake Smog....heavy maintenance at a reasonable price and he stands behind his work. I will definitely be using Bake Smog from here on out!!!....Thanks Oscar!!

I had planned on writing a review when I first found this place in 2011. Forgot about it. Planned on reviewing it again on my second visit in 2013. Forgot then, too. So I went back again today, and I'm finally doing it. Basically, this: in and out in a flash. No waiting (went in on a Tuesday afternoon, so your experience may differ). Cost, including certificate, which they send electronically to Sacramento: $45, or $40 if you give them cash instead of using a card. That's pretty much it! Oh, there's a small waiting room which has a TV you can watch, but really, you'll be done and on your way ASAP.

I have an '88 Suzuki Samurai that had failed several smog tests after some mods that my dad had done were corrected. This car was a very difficult "case" and had failed a year before at another smog center which provided great service.
However, now I knew I needed some mechanical investigation into why it was failing and Oscar was kind enough to do the mechanical "CSI" without charging me an arm and a leg.
He replaced the oxygen sensor, made sure the vacuum tubes were going to the right places, and checked the engine timing. It still wasn't quite passing. The next step was possibly the dreaded carb rebuild. However on a hunch he replaced the thermostat and it passed. Since that time I have found that the thermostat, even when working right to keep the engine cool, creates a problem for Suzuki Samurai's passing smog.
After this experience, I'm making sure to bring in my cars for general maintenance, which they also do.

I was skeptical at first coming here to this smog location. I always knew it was here but never thought I would be trying it out. I came here because of the coupon I received in the mail for smog. I can't say enough about how great these guys are. About 6 months ago I needed a smog check and being new to Irvine, I got on Yelp for help. I saw these guys got great reviews and gave them a shot. I drive a big GMC truck and at the time, it was $40 cash for the smog. I have never paid $40 for a smog. It was fast and they were as advertised.
Fast forward to this morning...I was told by a supposed honest mechanic in San Clemente that I needed brakes in a few thousand miles (which was about 5000 miles ago). I scheduled a brake pad change with Oscar at Bake Smog and took my truck in. Oscar came into the waiting room and brought me back to the bay where my truck was on a lift and showed me - I did NOT need brakes. Not only do I not need brakes, I don't need brakes to the tune of about another 20,000 miles.
Needless to say - I would have never known the difference and they didn't need to be honest with me, but they were. Even though my truck had taken up his time and he had ordered brakes for me, he charged me nothing! I am about 5000 miles away from a 100,000 mile tune up and guess what I just scheduled.
The guys at Bake Smog do all types of auto repair and they will be my main mechanics from now on! The shop is small clean and no frills, but if you are looking for the rare honest mechanics - Oscar and his crew are the guys!

For smog testing, it doesn't get any better than this. Inexpensive and FAST! I smogged 2 of our family's cars here. Both times were quick and painless. I think each time I was in and out by about 30 minutes or less.
The reason I took off a star was because one of the cars I brought in had the AC system not working. I asked them how much to fix it and they told me to replace the entire unit, giving me a quote of about $600. Yikes. I took the car to another shop that specializes in automotive AC repairs and they fixed the system for under $200. So... yeah. I know their shop is a "smog" shop, but to be fair, they do advertise other auto repair services (including AC).
But if you need a smog test, definitely take your car here.

It was running perfectly well (though not clean enough to pass the smog test) before and then it was running rough. These guys said it was a broken engine mount. Where did that come from? Based on the recommendations here, I took my car to Bake Smog Center for a smog check and an oil change.
There is a comfortable waiting room where I sat while the work was being done. My car was just fine.
I did get good directions directly from Oscar -- take Rockfield to MacLaren and then make a right. Make a right at the first driveway. You will see the number from there. Make a right and park in front.

So...I know very little about cars or what a smog check entails...that being said, I think Oscar and his business are great! I went in for a smog check (probably could've guessed that by my prior statement). Like other yelpers have said, it is a little difficult to find, but if you're coming from the 405 South Bake exit, and when you get to Rockfield, turn left on McLaren and you'll be pretty close by. I overshot the plaza and ended up somewhere completely different...hahaha
When I got there, I wasn't sure where to go, so I kind of just parked in front of the garage (by the way, it's Unit E...it's small so you can easily miss it). Oscar came and talked to me and got me situated. He was very nice and accommodating. I was out within half an hour.

This place is cheap, fast, and convenient as everyone says.
One thing I want to point out - this place is kind of hard to find! I drove around for 20 minutes trying to find this place. It's tucked away in a plaza across from all the car dealerships. It's on the same side as The HAT and not visible from the main road.
Anyways, go here and you won't regret it. The mechanic doesn't try to upsale you or rip you off. You just go in, get a smog check, pay the $40 and you're done.

Came here based on Kathy H's review. He charged me $50, however, I quoted the $45 price I was expecting and Oscar (the owner) was able to match. I waited 15 minutes for my car to be serviced and another 15 minutes for the other service. I live in Irvine and can find smog checks for much cheaper price ($35) in Santa Ana, however it is Irvine and in the end I picked convenience. From The Hat, turn right on Rockfield and right on McLaren into the Irvine Business Center. It'll be on your right side when you enter the center with these directions.
I made an appointment for 8 a.m. and a few minutes after, they showed up and the Yelpers are right! The service is super fast and the staff are super nice. I have to agree with the other yelpers on this one. This place got me in and out in 20 minutes for a smog check and cert. My car passed and it was a flat $40 fee. Great YELP find!!! Woohooo!!!
The place is difficult to find but it's worth it. Its in the set of office buildings next to the Hat and Car Wash place...just look for the building number.
They also quoted me to replace my brakes and resurface the rotors for $140. Another quote I had gotten was $200 for the same thing. I think I'll have to come back again.

Wonderful! Oscar agreed to look at my car same day I called in. My check engine light failed a smog check at a test only station, and I wanted it to get repaired. Oscar said they could check it out for free and give me an estimate for repairs.
Turns out he could find nothing wrong, so he ran the smog test for just $40. I'm extremely happy with my experience here. They were accommodating, speedy, and helped me understand why the check engine light failed previously.
In addition to smog checks & repairs, they also do a variety of services including oil changes and brake inspections.
The place is kind of hidden inside a business park, which is across the street from the Irvine Auto Center. If you don't feel like waiting inside their tiny lobby, the Hat is walking distance.

The reviews here aren't exaggerating. In and out in no time. I arrived. Before I could get to the door, one of the guys had me pull my car around to the back. They were already working on two cars, but they got started on mine immediately and finished it while I stood there. Great service!

No frills, no coupons, just a smog check for my 2000 vehicle that cost $40 including the certificate. I called ahead on a Wednesday morning to see if they were busy and went right in. The whole visit was about 20 minutes. I would recommend Bake Smog Center!
Updated for 2016: Still a loyal customer! Bake Smog Center is the only place we take our vehicles for any service. Always honest with no up-sell, Oscar's shop is a hidden gem in OC. LOVE them!

I was in and out in less than 30 minutes. They are a little hard to find and probably don't get much drive by business, which is ultimately good for the customers cause you get in and out faster. Get their address and locate them, you won't be sorry. No frills, just good and fast service at a great price ($45). That is less $10 from those other guys just across the street.

This is a super late review. These guys are awesome. In and out in less than 20 minutes. One of the technicians even noticed one of my tires needed a patch. He gave the name of the tire place not too far from his shop and gave me instructions to mention he sent me there. When I got to the tire place, the service was good and all they charged me was 10 bucks. How cool is that!!!!

These guys are great. I've had three different cars in my family worked on here and am planning on taking a fourth. The prices are fair and reasonable and they do a good job and don't charge for things you don't need. One time they initially diagnosed a problem and when they got into the job, determined a different, less expensive fix was in order that saved me a couple hundred dollars. I went to them originally for a smog issue, but they are able to handle much more. I would highly recommend Oscar and his team to anyone.

Searched for a local mechanic on yelp after my car wouldn't start this morning and went with Bake Smog Center.
Oscar (the owner) had a contact for a tow and his contact price was extremely competitive. I may sign up for AAA for 3 free tows/yr now after this experience.
After having the engine inspected, diagnosed, & fixed, I was out of the shop within 30 minutes. Car runs fine now. The part I needed replaced wasn't available at his supplier and the dealer's price for the part was absurd,
Glad to see that he consulted me before simply ordering the part from the dealer at a crazy price!
He advised me to wait a few days for the part from his supplier to be in stock again at a cheaper rate.

Fast and quick service for my brakes. They look honest and behave honestly. I asked about my clutch problem. They told me it might be due to clutch or transmission, and expensive to fix. If the 3rd gear is not too bad, just try to live with it.

I was running errands on a weekday and swung by the smog center without an appointment. It didn't occur to me that it was lunch time (11:54) until I saw the two bags of food that had been delivered for the mechanics. There were two people ahead of me and one of them told a mechanic while I was there to go ahead and do the brakes and a tuneup. I figured I'd have to come back later but no, they got me out the door in less than 25 minutes. And they dropped their price from $45 to $40 when I said that I had found them on Yelp. It almost makes me wish that I had to have my car smogged more often! :)
P.S. For those who say that Oscar isn't chatty enough, he came into the waiting room with my car keys and announced, "Listo!" with a nice smile. I told him how happy I was with the service, etc., but as soon as I started talking, I could see the curtain come down. His English apparently isn't very good. As I walked out to the car, I wondered why he had spoken Spanish to me. I'm as Anglo in appearance as they come. Then when I started the car up I realized that I had the radio tuned to CNN in Spanish. I understand it pretty well but I'm too lazy to practice speaking. So say "!Hola!" to him and you'll probably get all the chat you want.

My wife recommended this as the cheapest smog center in the area, so, being a cheapskate, I went. Saturday morning, no appointment. $40.00 and in and out in twenty minutes. It doesn't get much better than that.
When I spoke to the owner, he told me that it costs him more to run ads and coupons than to just charge less, so that's what he did. Now that's how you beat the competition. I highly recommend this shop.

Oscar is the man!!
My truck needed a smog check so I took it to Bake Smog, but they couldnt test it, as the renewal said it had to be at a Test Only shop. So he recommended a Test Only shop down the street. That was hell, see my review for master smog. Worst shop ever. Oscar, you should lose a star for that recommendation! haha just playin.
Anyway it failed at the Test Only, so I brought it back to my man Oscar. He not only fixed it for cheap, HE TOOK IT TO A TEST ONLY SHOP AND GOT IT PASSED! Hows that for customer service!
Couple of coworkers have been going to him for work, and if I ever need anything else, this is definitely the spot!
Oh yeah, and he said he stopped recommending master smog cuz a few other people complained how crappy they are! hahaha!

Are you tired of getting ripped off by your car mechanic? Search no longer, Bake Smog Center is the place for ALL your car needs. Oscar is trust worthy and humble! As a female customer, I do not feel I am being taken advantage of, unlike most other places where they tell you something else needs a change or repair!
They now take care of all our car needs from breaks, tune ups, oil changes, & even some major engine issues.
Oscar and his crew are all around experts! We have been coming here for a while, and didn't want to review in fear of his clientele growing too much - TRUE!, it's great service, quick & well priced! But, Oscar deserves the credit where it's due! He ought to change his business name to attract more clients!

In and out in 15 minutes! Slightly difficult to find but they took me right away after I called ahead (while on my way to the shop). In the waiting room, they have a sign with the cost of smog+certificate that totals $50 but when you go to do the smog+certificate, they only charge $40 (like other yelpers had mentioned). I was debating between Super Smog and Bake Smog but the choice was simple. I'm sure Super Smog is great but why pay the extra $10?

Super fast service...only 15mins. Paid flat $40 (including taxes etc). I called head to make sure they are available and dropped by during early lunch time. I was out the door in 15mins (OK... More like 16mins) super fast. Certificate is electronicly transmitted to DMV. All I need to do is pay the registration renewal. I would highly recommend this to anyone in the Irvine area who needs a quick smog check. I found them not too hard. They are with a bunch of other mechanic shops. They are suite E. Hint... Bring your smog check renewal letter from the DMV.

Oscar is the owner and the main mechanic.(and the person i spoke with) I only went to this place based on my fellow Yelpers reviews. The results were good. My car periodically had a check engine light signal and wouldnt pass smog due to a coolant sensor error.
So i needed to get my Coolant Sensor/ Connector Water Housing replaced. He identified the issue instantly and provided an estimate of the total cost (he even included the tax).
Regarding his estimate: He doesnt charge you for the expected hours a job should take, but rather how fast he can actually get the job done. Many mechanics charge you labor based on how long a job is expected to take. Charging you 2-3 hours of labor when they finished it in 30 mins. Such honesty by Oscar was appreciated and noted.
I was very impressed with the service and plan on returning here to have my Brakes changed in the near future.

- No Upsell or attempt to squeeze more money out of you
Cons:
- Location is hard to find, and it is tiny (like a hidden gem errr garage)

This place is a little hard to find and it ain't much to look at, but who cares when a Smog check on a Saturday morning literally took only 10 minutes from start to finish.
And most importantly, the Smog check only cost me $40 flat. I've paid a lot more and waited a lot longer for previous Smog checks. Nice Yelp find.

I have to agree with the other reviews. I needed a smog today (sat.) , I got there about 9am and i was the only one there. Oscar (owner) did the test and I was in and out in about 20 minutes and he only charged me $40!! I would go back there again and I highly recommend this place.

This is the best place to get a smog check. $40 out the door is a pretty good price. You might find a cheaper place but those other places always has a wait. I have brought 5 cars here the last couple of years and every time I come there is no wait maybe 1 car ahead of us. I come during my lunch hour drop off the car walk over to the Hat for lunch, when I get back my car is ready.
One time I tried to save myself $10 and went to a place across the street the guy there told me it was a 3 hour wait. 3 hours of my time is worth way more that $10 so I went back to Oscar at Bake Smog and have not strayed since.

Our car failed smog unexpectedly due to "being unable to connect" to the smog system's computer. It turns out it was just a fuse (check them all before you get smogged). Oscar changed it, didn't charge us anything, and showed us to a nearby smog place. It passed without a hitch, same day, he took care of it super quickly when we arrived. He was incredibly helpful-- thanks!

I just got back from my SMOG check. I was in and out in less than 10 minutes. Great service, I would recommend this place.
I then asked him about my brakes and whether I should get them replaced (they were making noise). He told me that I still have 20% left and to drive them another 5k miles before I needed to replace them. I appreciated the honesty so I'll be going back to him when I need my new brakes.

***** Great little shop and very friendly, I was in and out in 15 minutes. I paid $40 cash, passed the test, and got my certificate. It is a little hard to find, because their sign is rather small and not visible. It is in Irvine Business center off Rockfield and Mclaren. Oscar is the owner and he is a very nice guy, be sure to say hello to him and mention that you've read his Yelp reviews! I highly recommend this Smog Testing center.

Best, most reliable nicest mechanics in Orange County.
I went in for a smog test and walked out with a new air pump, brake lights, a fixed door, new oil and a new oil cap for a price so low I can't disclose it.
My mom had previously taken my car to Sears Auto Center for some maintenance and I went to these guys for a smog check after.
Not only did the mechanics find why my car wasn't passing smog and showed my exactly what was wrong ( by taking me under the car and demonstrating why the air pump was broken) but they found that the Sears guys had broken my oil cap and my car had been hemorrhaging oil like a dying goat.
Long story short, these guys hooked me up.
They took the time to show and explain to me everything they were doing
And even though their English isn't the best
I know a hell of a lot more about cars now
These guys are nice, honest and fast.
I repeat. NICE HONEST and FAST.
And so cheap.
These guys are my #1 mechanics from now until forever
Please give them your business.

Just came back for a smog check today. Great and fast service, in and out for less than 30 mins. Unbeatable price! $40 out the door with certificate.
I have a small SUV and the price is still only $40, what a bargain!
This place is hard to find as other reviewers have mentioned as it is situated in the midst of office suites. It's located at the corner of McLaren and Rockfield inside the Irvine Business Center.

Cheapest place around for a smog test. The posted prices are about $30 higher. But if you stand there looking confused long enough (or just ask), it's $40 including transmission of the certificate. Mine took a little longer because of someone ahead of me and the technician wasn't the greatest at communicating, but overall I'm happy because of the price.

i have yet to come here for the mechanics part of the place, but for a smog check, it was only $40. i've been calling around places around irvine and it's usually about $60 with (and some WITHOUT!) certificate. but to my surprise, they were opened early (i was the first customer of the day at 8am) and they were quick. i passed smog, and got my certificate and was out of there in less than 30 minutes. the mechanic, Oscar was so great. my '01 honda civic needs a new timing belt, and he estimated about $380 including parts, and $200 if i bring the parts in (luckily, i know someone who works for honda and can get parts of CHEAP!). very reasonable, according to my car savvy boyfriend! i look forward to going here for all of what my car needs. =)

Definitely going to come back here for other services.
Showed up and Oscar was pretty helpful in setting me up for my smog check. I asked him to do a pre-test($20) for smog before doing the actual test($40), which would have come to $60 total. However, when he started doing the test, it was apparent to him that the pre-test was not necessary and we could go straight to the full test...smog passed and he charged me only the $40.
I took an auto mechanic class years ago so I could tell when mechanics are messing with you (which way too many do) and based on my conversation with him about smog and other services, he seems honest and reliable, so I'll be back.
