For quite a while I knew there was something very wrong with my 2007 Volkswagen Jetta. After 30 or 40 minutes driving, it would slip out of gear, then slam back with a big -bang! However, since the commute to my new job was a mere 9 minutes away, it was a problem I could get by with ignoring for the most part....until I couldn't.
When it slipped out of gear one day on a hill with traffic zooming all around me, I realized ignoring this problem any longer could be hazardous.
I'm so glad I found Summit Transmissions. Jerry and his team were top notch from my very first call. I had already brought it to a few different shops over the past few months, and they would do this or that...service, replace parts, belts, etc. Each time I'd fork over a couple of hundred bucks...and big surprise, the problem never got fixed. After explaining my car's issues, Summit did a complete diagnostic (for half the price of the dealership!) and came back with a competent plan and fair price for the service. (Valve body replacement, btw).
Now, what makes this company so very special, and what compelled me to write this review is what happened over this weekend. I left for LA to celebrate the long 4th of July weekend with some friends. It took over 4 hours in stop-and-go traffic to get there, but my car ran fine. Sunday night I hopped in the car to go to dinner, and shifting from park to drive I felt a big -Bang! and the car went into "limp mode". No way I could drive 150 miles home like that.
Of course EVERYTHING was closed on Monday (July 4th), so slightly panicked, I called Jerry at Summit. He called me back a few hours later (even though they were actually closed too!) and assured me he'd help me figure out what was going on. By Tuesday morning he had an appointment for me with a shop in Reseda that he knew was trustworthy. (Shout out to Leon's!) After a round of diagnostics at Leon's and a series of phone calls between the two shops and myself, they were able to fix my thankfully minor problem (loose solenoid) and I was on my way back to SD. Jerry even covered the cost of Leon's service himself. That completely blew me away! He is truly committed to the work he does, and stands behind it 100%. I can tell you I have never experienced such a fine level of customer care in any industry, ever. Truly exceptional! Summit Transmissions, you have a customer for life!

SHADY! I just don't see how people have had good experiences with this business after what I just went thru. My sister took her car there. I then called to speak with Jerry. He charged her $67.85 for an estimate, only to say that he is not sure exactly what the issue is. $900-1000 to replace the solenoid, then go from there. He would start with one thing using the process of elimination, charging for labor each time. He then said that only 1/2 of the estimate would be applied to the overall cost should she decide to have them do it.
After all costs totaled, his cost is higher than a factory rebuilt transmission, with a warranty!
On top of that, he was requiring her to put down 50% of the estimate prior to him ordering parts. I have never heard of this from a reputable business.
I wont be taking any of my 6 vehicles there...what a joker.
There are just TOO many other good transmission shops in San Diego to have to go here.
Jerry, please don't reply to this, I have had enough of your BS you rip-off artist.

Sandy and Jerry are the nicest people you could ever wish to meet. Jerry spent a lot of time with me explaining the problems with my car. I thought they were major problems, but Jerry said they're not, he told me what I should have repaired first and offered a timeline and alternatives. I went there expecting to spend hundreds and left very happy, only spending minimal. I will recommend Summit Transmissions to anyone who will listen. They will definitely be my first call for anything car related.

Everyone here is awesome. I feel like they are always up front with me even if I don't get the work done there. They will also work with my extended warranty which not everyone does. Not the cheapest or fastest in town but honesty is priceless for auto repairs. I plan on returning if any more issues come up with my car.

I could not be any happier with the service that I received at Summit from Jerry and his crew. Summit's employees are extremely professional and customer oriented. Jerry only recommended work that HAD to be done and provided a very competitive quote in a timely manner. The quality of work and post repair support / follow-up have been unmatched. I realize that there are many options when it comes to auto repair, however if you do not give Summit a chance to look at your vehicle you are doing yourself a disservice.

Triple A thought my 2003 Chevy Silverado needed a new transmission and towed it to Summit Transmission. Jerry figured out my 4 wheel drive was slipping into neutral and my transmission was fine. If he were not so honest, he could have easily sold me a new transmission. With my daughter starting SDSU in the Fall, I really could not afford a new transmission. I'm grateful I went to Summit. They are honest.

I was recommended to check this shop out for my transmission needs by a friend who works at ANOTHER AUTO REPAIR CENTER! Their quote was way below dealership. Prices wise? I won't complain! Very professional customer service and prompt to keep you updated with what's going on with your vehicle. I'll definitely be back to keep my charger running at its best.
Oh, by the way, I'm surprised that they don't recommend you bunch of flushes and fixes and little things that can add up to $200 a visit, Like other places do.

My review is based on the good reviews listed here as well as the answers to the poor reviews provided by the owner... I will be taking my 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee here to have the Transmission serviced and I will be having them diagnose and repair other problems that my beauty has developed after 21 years and over 200000 miles...

My check engine light came on and my oil change guy said "uh oh, that's a transmission problem". I hadn't had any signs of transmission failure (95k miles on an '04 Jeep Cherokee) and was very scared to hear that I needed a $3500 new transmission on my car only worth $5K. As a female, the most worrisome thing is wondering if a mechanic is scamming me or not. My car then locked into second gear and wouldn't come out. Ugh...now I needed help ASAP.
I took my Jeep to Jerry at Summit after finding them on Yelp. They weren't the closest, but I liked their reviews. I drove 30mph in second gear for 8 miles to get to them and of course needed it repaired like yesterday as I was leaving on a trip soon. They were so gracious and helpful even though I was stressed and hurried. Not only did they fit it in the same day I called, they gave me a rental car for $25/day, and had my car fixed in 24 hrs. It was only a few sensors totaling under $600 (including rental car). I've never been so happy for a $600 repair bill, ha! I was so thankful that it wasn't a super major repair, and that Jerry was honest about it. He took the time to explain everything to me and even came out to shake my hand when I picked up my car.
It's so nice to have not only a good and honest mechanic, but a good and honest person when you are in a stressful situation like that. I'm thankful for the quality of work, but also for how they handled me as a human. I'd highly recommend them to anyone for any work. I'm going to start going just for an oil change! Thanks Summit!

Great service and great people. This is by far the best auto shop in the SD area. I have been taking my vehicle here for a year and a half and the work they do is outstanding. Jerry the owner is extremely knowledgeable and puts the costumer first. Yea, the prices are a little higher than some shops but the quality of work far outweighs the price. Highly recommended.

I had several issues with my 2010 Dodge Caliber that were NOT covered by my maintenance contract with Carl Burger. Jerry took the time to call the dealership to find out what was covered, then worked with me to determine the task priority so I was able to afford the work Summit had to do! Although it was expensive (for me), the work needed to be done and I know I would have paid more by going elsewhere. Summit does excellent work, they stand behind their work, they are fair and friendly! I have now taken 3 cars there, my own and 2 of my daughters. I recommend them!! Thanks, Summit, you're the best!!

Simply awesome. My husband's transmission went on his Chevy Impala SS. He was completely distraught. We went to the dealer for an estimate and immediately had it towed over to Summit. Very professional and excellent follow through by the owners. This is a top notch company who care about their work and reputation. The work was done well and on time. Make an appointment and head over. You won't be disappointed. Five stars.

My car is older (100,000 miles plus) so it needs lots of repairs from time to time. I appreciate the integrity and honesty of the owners, Jerry and Sandy Kubitsky, and know that as a woman, they are looking out for my best interest when I bring my car in for repair work. These are really nice people, and you will feel completely confident placing your vehicle (whatever the year, make or model) in their very capable hands!

Very pleased with the service at Summit. I was referred here by my local mechanic who doesn't work on transmissions. Summit is a little far away for me to use for small routine maintenance, but would definitely go here if I lived closer.

Fair, honest, and excellent quality work. I have been coming to Jerry and Sandy for my transmission issues for years. You can trust that they will only repair that which needs to be fixed and they stand behind their work! This goes a long way in this industry because transmissions are becoming increasingly complex and a lesser shop without good business ethics could potentially take advantage of customers and charge them for services not needed. You will not find these behaviors at Summit Transmissions! 5-stars!!!

The journey of finding that ultimate transmission shop has to stop here. It really does because the owner and his workers are honest, full of integrity, hard workers and really fair. I'm not going to go into the entire story of my experience here but I went in for a transmission flush and came out with a transmission service that cleaned out my gross oil. I'm a girl that doesn't know much about cars so that's the only description I can give you. I can tell you that they don't rip you off and they don't lie to you. I saw a lot of people in and out while my car was being worked on and it was as if their customers are their best friends. Nobody wants a lying, dishonoring friend - so there's no doubt that they built these relationships through great, reliable work with the morals and beliefs to back em up. I don't think I can ever take my car anywhere else.

Finally a auto repair shop I can trust. Felt comfortable when dealing with the staff. Estimates were accurate, broke the repairs down in a list of which ones need immediate attention and what can wait. Would recommend this shop to my closest friends. Can't say enough about this place. Upon a recommendation from my carburetor guy, I brought in my 1964 Cutlass with a real "clunky" shift into low.
He drove it, looked at it, drove it some more, did some research and then called and was completely upfront and honest...
"I'm not full confident that we can tackle this problem on this particular car with this kind of transmission," said Jerry on the phone. "I'd like to recommend you to someone who specializes in these."
He then not only recommended an old car expert, he also volunteered to drive my car over there, and remembered to tell them the other problem beside the bad shifting into low; the car also needed some adjustment when going into Park so it wouldn't pop out.
Totally pleased I asked how much for this incredible service and he said 'Nothing!"
Wow!
I'm bringing my wife's Explorer in today and I am fully confident in a great job at a fair price.

Easily five stars, and that is impressive since technically nothing on my car was fixed. So how does a mechanic get 5 stars without fixing anything? Read on my friend:
So my car decided that it no longer wanted to go above 55 mph. Any attempt to go faster than this was met with the engine revving but, no extra power. So, due to my belief that driving 55 mph on a freeway is dangerous I had my car towed to Summit Transmissions to be checked.
They drove it, tested it, drained the transmission fluid, ran it through the whole gamut of checks but unfortunately, the problem would not replicate itself. Since I have had weird electrical issues with the car since I bought it, I asked after all the tests were done if that could have something to do with it and the guy working there said yes, it might.
But again, why am I giving 5 stars to someone that technically did not correct my problem?
Because
1. They tried. They tried tirelessly to find it and when they couldn't, instead of faking a problem and charging me hundreds of dollars for something that wouldn't have solved anything I wound up being charged something like 80 dollars for what was several hours of work. So that was amazing.
2. Explained everything they were doing and going to try to do over the phone and were very professional about everything. I have had mechanics in the past that don't seem to care and are rude, but these guys were great.
3. Since my car was with them, and I needed to be to work the following day, I needed to take a cab out to meet them. This despite the fact that they offered to pick me up at the trolley station if I could get there since I live like 20 minutes away. Well, the cab companies in Chula Vista are terrible, and what started out with me calling a cab at about 3:50 pm resulted in me not being able to get to Summit until about 6:30 pm (aka one hour after they closed).
However, due to a previous commitment they had in the area they were able to wait for me and I was able to get my car that night instead of having to miss another day of work.
So 5 stars is based on their honesty, professionalism, and just being all around good people. When I lived in Michigan I took my car to the same place for like 15 years because I knew the people and trusted them. I have been in California for about 6 years, and with this place, and Becka Automotive, I now feel like I have two reliable places that feel like home. And that is a good feeling.
Thanks Summit.

After being told by the Subaru dealer that I needed a new transmission I sought a second opinion. Luckily, with an on-line search I came across Summit Transmission. The other reviews here about Jerry & Sandy are spot on - very professional and communicative with excellent customer service. Jerry will give your vehicle a proper diagnosis and will take the time to explain to you his solution to the repair.
After Jerry fixed the issue with the transmission (for far less$$ than the dealer suggested with their unnecessary work)... I brought my vehicle back for another issue. Jerry gave me a reasonable quote to repair and while doing the work realized and brought to my attention that he didn't in fact need to replace a part - the repair was done for 1/3 Jerry's original quote. This had beed the first time a mechanic has given me a quote and didn't come within $.10 of the quote.
I am very pleased with the honesty, customer service, and quality of work of Summit Transmission!

Driving back from Redlands to San Diego late at night, my car stopped accelerating while driving on the freeway.(scary) I had to have it towed back to San Diego. I thought it was a transmission issue, so I took it to Jerry at Summit. He test drove it and it stalled a few times. He told me it was possibly something else and he, himself, drove it to a friend of his whom he had used for many years. (C an D-great service there, too..) The car actually stalled a few more times on him as he was attempting to drive it to C and D. He had to push it to the side, then coast it down hill to get it as close as possible to the C and D garage. Luckily, it kicked back over and ran just long enough for him to make it to the garage. He was right. It was a fuel pump. C an D took care of me. Jerry didn't charge me for his time. (Who does that kind of service for customers nowdays?!!!) The guys at C and D suggested that I have Jerry double check the shifting between first and second. They thought there may be some adjusting necessary. Without hesitation, I took it back to Jerry. He took care of the problem. Good guy, (-his wife was very nice, also...), great sense of humor(we had small chuckle about his pushing adventure), honest, excellent customer service. I couldn't have asked for a better experience!

This establishment is a high pressure sale business.
They will not give you any sort of estimate without pulling your transmission at the cost of $695.00 and then hit you with an outrageous repair quote, even though there was nothing wrong with my transmission.
When I informed the owner I felt I was being ripped off and was having my vehicle with transmission parts in boxes towed to a different establishment he went into a RAGE, bashing the other establishment, telling me that I would get ripped off and they would claim parts would be missing (which they were, I had to go back 2 times to retrieve major parts - oil pan, bolts, and the entire torque converter) and there was no way the other place could do the work for $1,500.00 compared to his quote of $2,950.00. He then said he would do the work for $2,300 but no warranty.
Then he demanded CASH to release my car to be towed. When the other transmission establishment checked the wear on the transmission they said there was no defects and actually very light wear and it was obvious Summit Transmissions were just trying to rip me off.
As soon as I handed him my cash in 20 dollar bills, his wife shot right to the bank and they blocked the car with Jerry's motorcycle until his wife returned. Very Strange.
If they suspected counterfeit bills then why wouldn't he accept debit payment?
Avoid this place, unless you like to throw your money away.
The BBB is investigating my complaint!
P.S. Jerry's first words when I called him was to ignore negative YELP reviews.
And that he had an A+ BBB Rating. It appears that there are now far less reviews than when I first called on July 5, 2012. He must have a way of removing them.

Summit was great. Went in for a transmission that would lock in 2nd gear on hard stops, ended up just needing a flush/refill. All said and done, it was just over $200 out the door, which is unheard of for transmission work. Usually costs that much just to look at it. Techs communicated what was going on all the way through, Highly recommend.

I have been taking my vehicle to Summit for two years now and couldnt be more pleased. Jerry is an honest broker and will not only give you all the info you need to make an informed decision, but will go the extra mile ensure that all services are done to the highest standard.
I recently brought my vehicle in to do a oil change. After the service Jerry walked me out to do a final check on the transmission fluid. It was a little dirty but plenty fine to drive off with. I was in a rush and left right after. About an hour later Jerry gave me a call and explained to me that the service done that day was not up to his standard. He then told me that whenever was convenient for me, I could come in to get a FREE transmission fluid flush. I was blown away, especially since I was more than satisfied with the service prior to his phone call. Jerry really impressed me with his character that day. The 20 min drive to his shop is more than worth the customer service and product you get. Thanks again Jerry!

As someone who likes the convenience of my car, but not the upkeep, Summit Transmissions was a breath of fresh air. Jerry was upfront and extremely helpful in getting a part of my transmission replaced. I really felt like he went the extra mile for me, but I think they just call it customer service at Summit.
Attempting to keep the long story short, after some unrelated work at the downtown Firestone, my car began leaking transmission fluid. Went back for a flush, and gasket replacement and still had a leak. On the next trip back, Firestone discovered there was a crack in my transmission....ouch! Firestone said they could not do the repair. My husband recommended I take my car to Hontech, which came highly recommended to him by a friend. Hontech informed me that the likely cause was a result of the unrelated work at Firestone - likely a mechanic either leveraged against it or slipped and cracked it while replacing the CV joints....double ouch! This is where I learn that transmissions require a specialist and Hontech sends me out to La Mesa to Summit. Had no problem getting the green light to get my car in the next day for them to have a look. After telling Jerry my situation and him sensing my hesitation to get this fixed right away (I was anticipating small claims court at this point), he offered to call Firestone. After a few minutes on the phone with them, Firestone agreed to pay for the replacement of the part of the transmission that was cracked. I walked away, took the bus home for the afternoon, and the car was ready the next day. Many thanks to Jerry and his team for making what could have been a nightmare into a bearable situation!
I would like to point out, too, that Summit is located across the street from a bus stop that runs to Hillcrest, and is near a trolley stop, both of which are beneficial for a car shop.

Wow! I am super impressed! What a less than steller shop could have made into a bad situation, Jerry and Sandy made into a small, not terribly expensive situation for me.
Long story short, I just had my 1999 Ford Ranger into Drew Ford for other non related repairs and upon picking up my truck, they noted it had a transmission leak and was very low on fluid. However, they did not even tell me about it. I read it when looking over the paper work I got when I left. I was very concerned and after having a huge nagging feeling all day, I drove to work and got on line, and found Summit. After some research, I decided to give them a call and made an appointment for the next morning. I arrived about 930 am and as quick as he could, he took my truck out for a drive and got it on a lift for an exam. After a little bit, he took me out, showed me what was wrong and explained what needed to be done... I sighed and drove home, knowing I couldn't afford another big repair, but knew it was very serious. After making arrangments, I dropped the truck off the next morning and they quickly orderd parts for me.. Jerry let me know it would be about a day or so before all was fixed, but would keep me up to date.. With in a day and a half, I was all fixed and back on the road. I was quite impressed! He didn't try and sell me a new transmission or transfer case, just fixed what needed repair.. I am so happy and can say I am thrilled!

Jerry makes you feel you uncomfortable when getting a quote from him. He wil lie to you that there's no available(used, rebuilt, new) transmissions anywhere. Just before I left his establishment I made a few inquiries where I can find a new or rebuilt transmission, I found a few salvage places where they did have a used transmission. There you go, this guy lies. On top of that his price on fixing the transmission is ridiculous; he charges 2000-2500 to remove and fix your transmission. I think it's bs that most of these establishments pay their employees $100 an hour, that's exactly what he told me. He will even ask you questions on how to come up with the money, It's none of his business, only reason why he ask is to have you sign up for a in-store credit. I don't know but I feel like his "Great Reviews" most of them are fixed. He probably gets friends and family to write a great review about his place so he can rip off people...Not me buddy. Only reason why I'm writing this review is because I felt a bit disrespected when I pick-up my car.

Jerry was honest about what was up with my car and although I couldn't fix everything I wanted to, the valuable information he gave me about the rest of my car will enable me to prioritize future repairs.
As a former mechanic, I had a pretty good idea what was wrong just by the sound I was getting and sure enough, that was it. He didn't try to sell me any additional repairs, he just gave an honest assessment of my car's overall health and worked with me to get the most critical things done making the most out of the limited budget I had.
Having been in this business before, I am well aware of what transmission repair costs run and this place is very reasonable.
I'm definitely going to come here for future repairs. He did an awesome job!

I'm the kind of person who works hard for his money who doesn't trust many people because I know the world has become a very difficult place to be and when you find a person not a mechanic with integrity and passion for what they do, you have the peace of mind to know there are still people you can trust places you can take your car to get fix and at the end of the day I can tell my kids see there are still people we can trust. Thank You and Keep up the good work I hope my review helps another family in need of someone they can trust.

Wow! Summit Transmission has restored my trust that true quality and caring service businesses still exists. I was referred to Summit by a stranger when I was having trouble with my truck shortly after moving into the area. I was so impressed with the fact that Jerry and his team showed genuine concern. They went above and beyond to help me with resolving issues that I was having with my truck. I've been telling others about Summit every opportunity possible. Ohhhh...I was really happy with the price.

Jerry was recommended to me for servicing by the guys at Firestone. They thought I was having some transmission problems. I called Jerry and he took the time to ask me some good questions about how the car was handling and what I was experiencing. By what I told him, he recommended I purchase some SeaFoam to put in my gas tank. I did that and the car has been running beautifully. What great customer service! He was more concerned with helping me than trying to make a buck with work I didn't need. Where do you see that anymore? Wow! I'm really impressed! Thanks, Jerry!

I took my 2012 Volvo XC60 R-design to Swedish Auto Tech for repair on April 29th 2016. I found the car to have low compression on the #2 cylinder and an engine Code for Misfire in the #2 cylinder. My car was at the shop for a few days for them to diagnose the problem. On May 3, the shop let me know that they also diagnosed the car to have low compression on the #2 cylinder. I was given a quote for $4,217 to rebuild the head or $7,500 for an engine replacement. I asked for their professional opinion and was told that rebuilding the head would be the best option, especially because of the price difference. I was OK with either option. At that time I gave a $2,000 deposit to cover the cost of machining the head. The vehicle was there for 3 weeks. I was contacted and informed they were having issues getting the correct parts and it would take a little longer. One week later on May 31, I was contacted and told that my car would be ready for a test drive the following day and be ready around noon. I called on June 1 around noon and inquired about my car. I was told that it had broken down and needed to be towed back. I was also informed that I now owed $4,300. I asked if that included my $2,000 deposit and was told it did not. Total cost came out to $6,300, because of parts that the shop did know they needed and an $890 for machining the head, which was not on the original estimate. The extra charges would have pushed my wife and I to choose the engine replacement, especially because the price difference would have been minimal. Furthermore, when I asked if they had done a compression check before the test drive, they had. It tested at 105 psi instead of 140-150psi, as well as having intermittent misfire codes. So they knowingly took the car on a test drive with compression at 72% of optimal operating pressure and engine error codes. Their reasoning for the test drive, ...sometimes the issues work themselves out on a test drive.... At no point was I contacted about the increase in cost, nor was I asked for authorization to continue, which is required per California Law; Division 3, Chapter 20.3, Article 3, Section 9884.9. I then stated that I would not be paying for the repairs because I would have gone with the engine replacement instead of the rebuild had I known about the increase in cost, as well I was not going to pay for double labor on fixing my car because of their misdiagnosis of the issue. The manager tried negotiating by lowering the amount owed where I would not have to pay for parts, only the labor, with a total cost $3,800. However, my car was still not repaired. At this time I requested 2 quotes; 1) cylinder rebuild, 2) engine replacement. I told the manager I was not going to be paying for double labor that didn't fix my vehicle, and requested my $2,000 deposit back or be put towards further repairs, which he did not agree to. The manager stated he would be contacting the Bureau of Automotive Repair for advice. The following day on June 2 I filled a complaint with the Bureau. On June 10th I was informed that I was being charged $45/day for storage, starting from June 3rd, until I paid all outstanding debts on the first quote of $4,217. I was never contacted before that, informing myself that our business relationship had ended and quotes were not going to be provided. On June 16 the caseworker from the Bureau informed me that he had advised the manager that he should refund my deposit and return the car without charge. I picked up my car the following day on June 17 and it was covered in oil from the June 1st test drive. I ended up taking my car to another repair facility and within 4 hours they had discovered that the engine had a rod knock and it was advisable to replace the engine instead of a rebuilding it. This automotive repair shop broke California Law, misdiagnosed the problem, was unwilling to come to an amicable resolution, and expected to be compensated for work that left my vehicle in worse condition then when I dropped it off a month prior. I still have not received my $2k deposit
