Not the best service, but convenient location.
Came in for a smog after I fixed a bunch of things on a car I just bought.
First let me just tell you, that this business is VERY SMALL.
Their parking lot is on a giant hill and is SUPER TINY.
There's cars parked everywhere so you just have to squeeze in through.
They also share the plaza with two other businesses.
If there's no parking, then park on the street.
There seems like there is no wait times for smog here which is good.
But always call in to double check.
Expect about 30mins-1 hour wait for your car to be smogged.
It's $39.95 for the smog and an extra $8.25 for the certificate if you pass smog.
THINGS TO KNOW FOR SMOG:
1. Make sure that your vehicle DOES NOT have a check engine light on.
They will immediately fail you and still charge you for the smog even though they see the check engine light on as soon as they start the car.
2. Make sure that your check engine light actually works. I unknowingly failed smog because the light bulb on the cluster had burned out.
3. If you're uncertain on whether your check engine light works at all, just double check it by taking your vehicle to a repair shop to get your car scanned for any check engine light codes.
If you don't have any check engine lights, then you should be good to go!
I was really upset when I found out that my vehicle passed everything except for the check engine light bulb. But luckily, Alan, I believe he's the owner, was very generous in explaining to me the reasons and offering me to re-smog it after I repair the bulb.
P.S. Man with the beard at the front desk is not very friendly or talkative. Very awkward.

Avoid this place!!! They are crooks and thieves. I brought my car there for power steering pump change and I provided the brand new NAPA part And they promised me the car would be done 4 then they called around 530 and said the car wouldn't be done till the next day. After picking up the car and driving it away the car began to overheat. This car was running perfect before bringing it to the shop. When I returned to the shop the owner got very defensive and rude when I asked him to take a look at the car. This is very sad that he would burn a bridge like this just make a few extra bucks. Seriously I would never take the time to write a bad review but AVOID this place.

Every time I go to California Motor Works they impress me with their level of service. Fast, friendly and affordable, I completely trust them to give me a fair price, not suggest repairs I don't need and to make me feel secure and comfortable through the whole process. Thanks guys for exceeding my expectations each and every time.

Guys left my window open when it was raining, talking about it was an accident. How is it an accident when it's been raining for 4 days. Don't bring it here....

I brought my car here for a mandatory smog check. There's a coupon on the website but they told me it didn't apply since my DMV registration listed STAR certified station required. The guy tried to justify it by saying they have to run more tests (they don't) and when I asked him which tests, he didn't know. In the end I just paid the difference because I had already driven out there and it wasn't really enough of a difference to debate over.
The actual smog check was fairly quick and I was out of there in 25 minutes.
A couple things I discovered after I left:
1) Even though the OBD II port isn't behind the ash tray in my car, they removed it and didn't put it back in.
2) The mechanic didn't close my hood all the way and I noticed it bouncing up and down on the freeway.

Called AAA because my car had died near the 805 freeway. They towed it here for repairs, and man... I hope there's been folks who have reported this business to AAA. They are a rip-off, scam artists, unfriendly, unprofessional... the works.
If you need auto repairs done, you'd be much better off doing some homework. Please read these Yelp reviews before hand and listen to those of us who have had the unfortunate pleasure of dealing with this place.
Take your car somewhere else! The Kearny Mesa/Clairemont area is full of other, high-quality auto repair stores.

Came in for an oil change and was told I had a bad oil change plug, then another tech came in and told me the threads were bad in my oil pan. This is outrageous. I had a oil change done by a trusted mechanic a few months back and there was no issues with the plug or threads.
The other reviews must be true as this shop is very shady.
Beware.

This place was the downright worst place I've ever taken my vehicle. It was so bad I'm thinking about contacting the Bureau of Automotive Repair.
I'm only 21 and I do most of my own automotive work. So I don't go out for car service very often. But of course when smog time rolls around it's a necessity to actually take my car in and let someone else touch my baby. A smog check is simple and should not be cause for any mechanical harm... until here where I will pick up at the end of my experience with this joke of an automotive service establishment.
Upon failing the smog check the counter guy almost skipped an explanation of what errors occurred but went on about how I could come back for a recheck at a nice discount. (my ripoff radar went up at this point as the majority of places I've been offer one free retest and don't shy away from questions regarding the state of my car). The mechanic reports to me that one of my hoses (quite a hidden one) had been repaired with duct tape and so he had nicely TORN IT OFF, and showed me by putting in 3 or 4 fingers and yanking open the hole even more. This destructive action, making a small leak into a huge gaping hole showed on the smog test so much that my car was reported as a gross polluter and now I will be summoned for smog checks annually, twice as much as the rest of you. Then he slammed my hood down on a metal clipboard and I had to get my tweaked hood open myself to get it back.
My mechanic who replaced the hose said he had never ever seen a gross polluter on a car as new as mine and that when I took my car in for a test the smog technician had no legal right to make any modifications to the systems in my car and furthermore he must test the vehicle as it drives in. He could have failed the car functional test based on the shoddy hose repair, but doing damage and then testing to create a reason for me to have to get smogged every year is beyond unethical.

This place is the biggest ripoff ever. I intend to report them to the BBB as well as the state for what happened yesterday. To begin with it was a mistake to go there in the first place I hadn't realized that they were the same place I went to 2 years ago for a smog inspection they told me my truck needed a new air conditioner compresser price $800.00 I called around and went to another place that told me if I needed it the price was $450. Turned out I needed a cleaned hose and new freon price 129.00 fix lasted more than 2 years until I sold the truck.
Yesterday I bring in my fine running car and they tell me it fails smog they say that my hoses are cracked and need replacing price $116.00. Tell me if I go somewhere else I have to pay again for smog. I go to another station 5 minutes away show them the hoses they smog my car no problem. I ask if I were to replace the hoses the price $45.00. Quite a difference. I would recommend no one go to this station for anything. The owner was rude and I am going to pursue this ripoff. There was nothing wrong with my hoses and I wasted the price of a smog inspection . An awful place.. If I could give it a zero that is what they deserve.

We agree with MV's review...ripoff and difficult to work with
COuld not get ahold of manager ever..employee Alan argumentative
cold, distant and not helpful...our car was not wamed up properly
(sat all morning and ran only 2 minutes for test) and it failed..they
refused to allow to warm up..went to another place and
car passed!!!
Do not go here...terrible service, disingenuous display of "nice attitude"
until things go awry slightly then they are your enemies....

There's no doubt in my mind these people are crooks. Like many others, I came in with my coupon from the Reader for $16.99. The guy told me because it was a Honda it would be $48. 3 times the coupon price! The check engine light has not come on in my car in 2 years. Low and behold, I come back 40 minutes later "Sorry your car fail engine light come on during test. We fix for you!" Complete crooks. I know they did something to cause the light to trigger and I intend on reporting to the Bureau of Automotive Repair.

Took my truck in for smog. I had not noticed it but my Check Engine light was burned out so it failed smog altho it passed the emission test. The technician should have stopped the test as soon as he turned on the key and saw the Check Engine light was out but instead he wanted to collect $49.95 to do the whole test. No special rate for a retest.

I had my 2004 Honda Accord smog checked by this merchant in Aug 2013. Service was quick, professional and efficient. Front counter employee checked me in and I waited about 15-20 min for the service. I did not read the reviews prior to going to this merchant, otherwise I would have probably not gone. However, each review has to be taken individually as each person has a different situation. Total paid after SD Reader coupon discount was $25.20. A fair price for this type of service.

These people are scam artists. I came here for a smog check, mostly because I had a coupon, and they failed my smog. When I asked them what could possibly be wrong, they gave me a well rehearsed, script of how they wouldn't know unless they took the time to figure it out and they wouldn't even tell me their hourly rate, even though it was posted on the wall behind them. When I pointed it out to them, it was like they didn't want to admit it was there. I don't see how people who fix cars for a living couldn't made an educated guess as to what's wrong based on the readings. I got the hell out of there. A few days later, I was telling a coworker about that place and he told me he had gone there with the same coupon as me, and they did the same exact thing to him too!
I ended up taking my car to my dad and he thought it would be my spark plugs. We changed them for $50 and I got it resmogged at the Smog Clinic down the street, and passed with flying colors. Don't bring your car here, you've been warned!

First off, watch out for the reviewers with five reviews or less. Like Marcos B. Lol. Look at that guy's profile. Who would sign up to yelp to write ONE review?
These guys are your typical crooks, especially the Vietnamese dude who wears only black clubby clothes. I'm next in line to get my smog done and bring in the $11.95 smog coupon. The Mexican guy I talk to rings me up for about $22 because of the transfer fee and smog certificate.
Then a soccer mom pulls up in a recent model Honda Odyssey. She is handled by Vietnamese-dude-in-black. She also has the coupon, but somehow is rung up for around $30. When we both sit down and I tell her to look at the coupon and double check what she was charged.
She then realizes she was ripped off by $8. She then shrugs her shoulders and says she's not going to fight it and also will never come back to the place.
I also notice that Vietnamese-dude-in-all-black pulls HER car up before mine and does her smog check.
I guess first-come-first-serve means nothing to this place.
We both passed our smog checks, but service was pitiful. I can't imagine what I'd get if I brought the car in for real car repairs.
Great job guys, so they now have two customers who will NEVER go back to this dump.

Went in for a biennial smog check for my 2005 vehicle. The coupon from the Reader (sucky publication, by the way---but coupons are the only thing good about it ) promotes their $11.95 special (plus certificate and electronic transmission fees). Their motto was the 'fastest smog check in town." Well, I can honestly say it's true, as I was in and out of there in less than 15 minutes and my car passed with flying colors.
I can't speak for those vehicles with the probability of not passing, which I assume would encounter both problems and additional costs. But if your car is relatively new, and you're just following the DMV formality, then this place is the best! Clean waiting room too, with lots of good mags to read while you wait!

Went to get a smog test on my car to this place and passed everything but the visual. They had told me that it failed because I had a crack in some pvc pipe assembly that was related to the smog test. They said that after everything is said and done it would cost 200 o get it fixed and retested. Unfortunately I paid for it and they got the part but apparently the part that they needed and the one got was wrong and I paid for the wrong one. Seeing how I got the wrong one they said they would order the new one that I really needed and come back the next day when they have it. So I returned and the part they ended up getting for me was more expensive then the one that I had already paid for but because I prepaid for everything they said that I would need to pay for it. Then when they went to test the car all the sudden it had a check engine light that they had run a dianostic test to fix and it would run me 75 plus repairs even before they resmog. The part that I paid for was put on and I told then I was just going to have them reset my light and go through my 3 drive cycles before I do anything. Before I even get 10 miles down the road the light comes back on. Don't go here, its not legitimate. I have seen a trend that if you brought in a coupon then some how you have a problem with your car but if you don't then your car is just fine. I brought in a coupon and magically my car is broken. Should have read yelp first

AAA recommended this place when my car had to be towed off the freeway nearby. My timer belt had broken and they claimed it had damaged parts of my engine as well. Given that the car wouldn't start I didn't have many options to have it repaired elsewhere. I wish I had paid to have had it towed somewhere else. They charged me over $2000. After talking to other mechanics which all confirmed that my timing belt would've cost around $260 and even if there was other damage it wouldn't have costed more than $800, I am confident that this place is dishonest and scamming people.
On top of the lies and outrageously overpriced repair, they opened a 12 pack of soda I had in my trunk. First of all, they had no reason to be in the trunk at all - my engine is on the other side of the car! Secondly, that is just petty and the remaining 11 soad cans went flying out of the open box all over my trunk!
This place is awful. I have contacted AAA regarding their rating of this business.

I had a problem with my axel this past summer and decided to look at the AAA reccomended shops. I found a few and called to do some research and to get an estimate on pricing. CA Motor Works was friendly on the phone and had answered all my questions. So, yesterday I returned to get my car diagnosed because my car was acelerating funny and my check engine light came on. I had let a oil leak go too long without having it taken care of and it caught up with me and ruined the spark plug causing it to misfire and drive funny. They were great to quickly get it diagnosed and set me up with a rental car from next door and show me the estimate of the repairs. my car is running great now! They have earned my business and trust! I'm so glad I decided to go with them, they have great and friendly customer service versus some other shops I've been to where I feel like I'm inconviencing them and they talk to me like I'm stupid. just because mechanics are in demand doesn't mean you can forget about customer service, having your car in the shop is already frustrating enough.

It's sad to see so many bad reviews posted. We've gone to Alan for years. He has many loyal customers. When I was recently in, I commented to Alan that I was dismayed that more of his customers had not posted good reviews. I promised to do so & am living up to my end of the deal. I will continue to bring our vehicles to California Motorworks as their warranties expire. Although I've never gone to them for a smog check, the work they do on vehicles is great & they stand by the work they do.
I just wonder if any of these people had thought to talk to Alan. He likes his customers to be satisfied.

My family has been going here for years now. They provide excellent maintenance work as well as repairs. I was old-fashioned and kept going to the dealer until they just frustrated me too much. The dealers are so big they NEVER remember you and just treat you like a number. So, on my dad and sister's advice, I took my car to CA Motorworks. No line, no number, and Allan (the very helpful owner and or boss) asked me my name on day one and has not forgotten it since. I trust these guys. I believe they are honest. I have never been there and felt like they were trying to sell me anything extra or unnecessary. I highly recommend it if you are near 163 or 805 on Clairemont Mesa Blvd. Ask for Allan.

I wish I had read the reviews about this place. I brought my car for a smog and dealt with the manager Alan Phu. The mechanic was James. He failed my car because of the visual and he said that I needed a new catalytic converter b/c my car was knocking. I know my car very well and knew that I did not need a converter. Further, Alan said that James could not see the serial number on my converter which is required by Ca state law. This is new to me as well as the smog tech putting my car on a lift. I've never ever had my car on a lift for a smog inspection.
So I paid 39.99. I clearly remember Alan Phu telling me that if i return within 30 days and pass then I would only have to pay for the certificate. And if I dont pass then I pay nothing. Later, that week I had 2 mechanics confirm that my catalytic converter was great and he adjusted the timing so it would not knock anymore and it all looked good. So I returned and dealt with Alan again, they ran the test, the numbers were perfect ( I passed the emissions test) but he still would not pass me b/c I did not get a new converter, even though I did not need one. Lastly, he charged me 39.99 again. I reminded him that he specifically told me that it would be free if I return within 30 days, which I did. But he changed his story and lied. Instead he said that he charged me again b/c I did not get the repairs done at his shop. They are all sleazy, including some big Mexican who reminds of a club bouncer, that is very rude. The others are all Vietnamese and unethical. I have to research their price policy and hopefully the the state can clarify this for me as well as this "new law" about serial numbers. Very unhappy with their service, with their lies and will never return. I'm going to do everything I can to get a refund.

WARNING! - POTENTIAL, POSSIBLE FRAUD!- BEWARE! EXTREMELY SUSPICIOUS!
(NOTE: The company I am talking about's address is:
8025 Clairemont Mesa Blvd #200, San Diego CA 92111
Phone 858-560-1245)
Today I visited California Motor Works & Tires for a smog check because a friend found a coupon online for a discount:
The coupon stated a Smog check for $13.95 plus $8.25 certificate and $3.00 transfer fee, so not bad right?
Well, yesterday I went to a good mechanic that I know and trust to have some brake-work done and to have him look at my intake system and air-filter and after another satisfactory visit everything checked out fine.
Today I left my car in the care of Techinician Sam Phu, who failed my smog check during the Visual Inspection portion. The shop manager told me that the EGR pipe fitting was disconnected. This is a threaded fitting that is about the size of a garden hose head.
I told them, that it would be extraordinarily strange for this fitting to be loose because I had the air filter checked out yesterday, and my mechanic would have noticed it since they are next to each other. He called the technician over, and he told me it would have to be re-threaded and would cost me $75.00. At that time I told them no, but they aggressively tried to sell me on the labor, not wanting me to leave the shop. I finally told them I had no time, but I would have my mechanic take a look at it and they finally said okay and made me pay $17 for the failed smog check.
I returned to my mechanic and told him the problem and he said that unfortunately, he honestly didn't look at the fitting yesterday, but upon close inspection of the piece said that it DID NOT have to be re-threaded, and it was extremely strange that it came loose, especially the day of the smog check.
When this piece is loose, it makes a distinct noise that is OBVIOUS to hear. Before taking my car to California Motor Works & Tires, I NEVER heard this noise, but between the California Motor Works & Tires shop and my Mechanic (5 miles) I definitely heard the noise.
My mechanic replaced the piece securely and told me that at $20.00 for a smog check, California Motor Works & Tires would be making almost no profit, but many shops have these promotions to sell other repairs.
At this time I should say that it is possible, people paying the normal $60 for smog at this place may not have had any problems passing.
I have no HARD EVIDENCE to PROSECUTE this SHADY BUSINESS, but if ANYONE else has had a smog inspection from this place where they FAILED the VISUAL inspection portion and had to pay, or was told to pay for some repair, please contact me and if the situations are similar, we can file a class-action lawsuit and force the DMV to provide all records of past failed smog checks with similar problems and if we are correct and if we win, we can close this place down.
Incidentally, everything else about my well-maintained vehicle passed the smog test with flying colors so if it weren't for the EGR fitting, my car would have been finished and out the door in 20 minutes for about $20 which would have left the shop without a profit.
My advice and opinion is:
DO NOT GO TO THIS GARAGE FOR ANY REPAIRS! I BELIEVE THEY ARE UNETHICAL, IMMORAL, AND WITHOUT INTEGRITY.

I've taken my 2007 ACURA TL in for oil, fluids and brakes. My 2006 NISSAN ROGUE with 100k miles for shocks, springs, wheels, tires, alignment, clutch, full tune up and a smog. That was a big ticket but finished it quickly for a fair price. Cheaper and faster than quotes from other shops. I've referred plenty of friends to this shop and they have all had good experiences. It's hard to find a reliable and honest mechanic. I'm glad I found one.

Thanks to him, he saved me at least $10.00..I recommend anyone want to smog or test go to him. A few dollars more it will saves your insanity...

this place is the spot for me when I have a car issue for three simple reasons
honest, fair and best quality work for the dollar
I've been here with different vehicles that i used to own and would run into problems that costed big bucks and problems that i would not tackle on my own such as tranmission problems and sensors and wiring from air conditioning repair to cam positions sensors; all the work done here were better prices than if i were to bring it into a brand dealership to work on it, and the repairs were all taken care of on time or faster then they quoted
coming from someone that shops around for saving this place is worth checking out and giving your business as long as you know exactly what the issue with your car is and how they can you use their expertise to fix your automotive problems

Been using this place for smog checks on our cars since 2009, i have beenusing their coupons which is the lowest of any smog check and repair shops in kearny mesa san diego, coupon says $16 plus $8 for the certificate total $25, and they also send an electronic report to the DMV. It was pretty fast maybe 15-20 minutes tops. They have been straightforward with me if the cars need maintenance and repairs, like the time when my rav 4s brake pads were almost too thin, i had them quote a price, then they let me decide some other time if i want to have it replaced, which gave me time to compare it with other shops. Their price is right on, since it was a four wheel drive . A little less than others. So i decided to have them do it (i usually go to the dealer before). So far its been working great. I have been satisfied with their service. I will keep going to them for smog checks since its been the cheapest ever with their coupon. By the way ,since i maintain my vehicle well with oil changes etc, i have so far passed my smog checks, not failed even once. This is the affordable shop to go for smog checks.

Last week my car wouldn't be able to turn on the engine then i towed my car to this place. actually I know the good place in convoy st. but that day they're busy with many customers. Then the AAA towing guys recommended me to go to this place. he said that this place is good and a lot cheaper than others. I decided to give it a try because i don't wanna leave my car over night at the fixing garage.
i towed my car to California motor works and tires around noon. i really hope they can get it done before 6pm so i left my car with them. Around 4pm i got a phone call from them says They don't know what cause the problem they check all the battery, starter, and charger. but still couldn't find the problem. they let me left my car there, then i got no choice.
the day after, they called me around 11am and asked me that "do you use 91 gas?" i said "yes, my car(RX8) only use 91"
then they continue asking me "do you use synthetic oil?"
I told him "No, because my car don't need to use it"
he said that my car only can use synthetic because it has a hi rev engine.
I have been doing oil changed at many places including Mazda dealer, jiffy lube, and other places. They all said the same thing that the rotary engine only need the regular oil, NOT the synthetic.
So at that time i already know that the California Motorworks and tires are cheating.
they told me "You have to change your oil to be synthetic, replace the spark plugs, and replace the battery". "if you don't want to get your car fix with us you can tow your car to other place but you have to pay diagnosis price"
I ask them "why do i need to replace my battery cuz i just got a new one not so long ago."
do you know what he (Alan Phu) said? He said that because we have been testing your car many times and that's why your battery's weak now. you need to change it.
I told them "it's not my false. you should used your own battery testing my car"
he keep saying that i need to change the battery with them or else my car won't be able to turn on the engine.
He said the total price for replacing spark plug($62 each), oil change ($60), replacing battery is $650
i told them i'm not gonna replace my battery and do the oil change but he said your battery is weak but it still usable. but you have to do the oil change. the price without the battery changed is $550
After i saw the bill, i just don't believe myself. it shows the labor fee for oil changed is $25. that's really expensive. the labor fee for changing spark plugs is $75. the most expensive one is labor fee for running the test to see what's wrong with my car, it's $225.
so totally i paid labor fee for $325 just to want my spark plugs replaced.
this place is rip off and try to sell you stuffs. Never go there. I should have been to the place i used to go. and never listen to the towing guy.
the saddest thing is 2 days after my story one of my friend's car got the same problem the she towed her car to the one i used to go in Convoy st. Total price including spark plugs, and labor fee is just $180.

Failed smog test here as gross polluter, and kept me waiting for diagnosis for several hours until they said weren't able to do it. Took it to another bad place in Clairemont before going out to Santee, where I guess they are friendlier to RV's where they got it passed smog at test only center.

Never! Never! Buy tires or do business with this place! I paid $229 for two tires called Primewell and the one tire was flat within two days in the middle of Christmas shopping and traffic and so it was replaced and eight days later, I had to call AAA from church in the rain because the same side front tire and supposed new tire, if it was a new tire, was flat once more! Obviously, retreads! Even the sales lady at Sears tire department who saw my flat tire said to tell them that she said, "They sold me 'flat' tires!" A terrible business that I intend to sue and report to BAR and Better Business Bureau. Consequently,I asked for a different brand since, obviously, this brand is faulty, (Discount Tires told me, "Primewell was a bad brand with many complaints.") And California Motor Works and Tires will not give me a different brand without charging me another $229, nor will they give me my money back! And I can't talk to management because he is celebrating the New Years where I should be rather than dealing with these misfits! And they will not let me have his cell phone in order to resolve this issue! Oh, and I am talking about front tires and I feel lucky to be alive since I was on the freeway over Christmas and teach in Santee where luckily for me, school is closed right now! I consider this a life or death emergency! And their argument is "I just want new tires!" "No, that's not the point at all!"
I would give them a "O" rating! But there is no "O" rating! And one more thing, the service is very, very slow and since I've been there three times now and had to sit for hours and hours, I have seen all kind of shady things happen! For example, if you have a new white BMW and took your car there last week on Dec. 20, the new red paint on the side of your car was caused by one of their mechanics backing into a parked red car! I saw the whole accident and told management, but he ignored what I had to say and as it turns out, the red car belonged to him!

I had to get a smog and brake and lamp inspection. I looked all around for the best prices and they have them. $22 for a smog with certificates and transfer for a small american car and $70 for the brake and lamp inspection. other places wanted up to $150 for the inspection. I had no problems here. I was in and out in an hour for these two. And they even fixed the sound my car was making which was apparently just a loose EGR valve
Oh and they have free wifi which makes the wait go by so much faster.

I was looking for a place that does brake and lamp inspection, and I came across a review on here, so I decided to give it a try since I was short on time. The staff was nice and helpful. They told me it would take around 1hr so I decided to grab something from Burger King right next door. It took around 2 hours in the end. Like the other reviewer said, free wifi does help time pass faster!

This place is bogus, not only are they rude they lie, over charge and will do anything for a buck. I brought my Car to get a smog check and they passed it ,but failed on visual, I asked to see the problem. They showed me two little 5/32 vacuum hoses from the turbo to a little splitter then down toward the front of the engine. Not more than a foot of tiny hose, they wanted twenty bucks for the hose and seventy five for labor, and with the smog it was like $130. I went to Kragen and bought the hose for $3.58 and installed it myself In exactly 3 min. Went back to them the next day to get re-tested they not only charged me again they told that the repair was not done in there shop so the had to charge me full price. I also had a coupon For $13.95 they said it was a European model it was ten extra. My response Is that SAAB is a european body but a GM engine, They said it still Said SAAB. So I was charged twice for a simple smog check, these guys are shady .
