I brought my car here to get an idea of what kind of repair I was looking at and without actually doing a diagnostic (because I couldn't afford it) they gave me a ballpark figure which was leaning close to $600. When the part finally broke and I had no choice but to bring it in and brace myself pay the $600.
They called me shortly after to say the more expensive part they were thinking it could have been only needed to be repaired and it was actually a cheaper part I needed. I know how to change a tire and check fluids, but they could have charged me the full amount they originally stated and I would have been none the wiser.
As much as you would think honesty is a given in business, that is not always the case, especially with mechanics. I waited a week before writing this to be sure there were no issues with the repair and it has been great! Plus, it was pretty busy when they took my car in and they managed to get it done quickly considering we only called to set up an appointment the night before.
Honest, fair prices, quick work. As long as I live nearby, I'll be going here for all of my mechanical work.

So unfriendly and rude. Gone in for car repair and a few questions. Had the old fat dude talking over me the whole time and didn't care to listen to concerns or opinions. That's of course after he assumed I was a girl who knew nothing about cars and tried to completely rip me off. Walked right out and took it to an honest shop. Idc if ur good with cars or not, which now I won't find out cause their attitude sucks, but customer service and treatment is v important as well. Don't waste ur time here and don't let them steal ur hard earned cash.

Took vehicle for tire rotation. Asked how long 1/2 hour. Came back 1/2 not done. 1/2 is usual for tire rotation. Saw hood up. Inquired. They were checking fluids. Took 1 hour to complete. They should have asked if I needed my fluids check or any other inspection other than what I asked to be worked on! Time is money to them well same here! I understand their point but they sound like they need child-like instructions. Just do A and nothing else or do A and anything else you want to for FREE! Guys at desk sound intelligent so I guess when I need real work I'll give them a second chance. Lost mechanic so trying to weed them out!

So my alternator decided it was a perfect time to go bad but nonetheless I found this place from people's reviews.
Firstly, I used their online scheduling service and got a response within 24 hrs to bring it in first thing Monday morning.
Once I got there, I was greeted by Tom and John and I explained my issue. John immediately got someone to check it out and in less than 30 mins I had my suspicions confirmed. He assured me that the job could be done in about 2 hrs so I waited. The job costed me about 400 bucks which I thought was a bit steep but I needed that done. With being new to the area, I wouldn't have known anywhere else to go either. So I won't complain.
They were welcoming and hospitable.
Service was done in the timeframe they said.
My only issue(and the reason I gave 4 stars) was they took at least 30 mins to process my paperwork after my car was brought out front and ready to go.
It is my opinion that customers who are waiting should have preference, not those who you have to call and update. I was upset by this. Although John apologized I think it shouldn't have happened in the first place.

The rear brake pads on my car were worn on one side but not the other. So based on the reviews, I called to make an appt to have my car looked at. The guy who spoke to me said it may take a few hours and they may keep it overnight to diagnose and fix the problem. He also said it may involve extra costs depending in the condition. Which is understandable. I said I just wanted them to find out whats wrong with the car first and then go from there. He said they can not just take some parts apart and then put it back without fixing it! Well, why would you charge fees for diagnostics?? And when I asked what if I could not afford the cost of fixing the car since I am a student and it may take me a while to come up with the money. He said "Then you should not be driving" WTF!!! SERIOUSLY??!!! I just laughed, hung up and looked for a REAL and PROFESSIONAL mechanic.

I'm relatively new to Hollenshade's, but my extended family has used them for years. In the few times I've been there, I find them to be the most honest, high integrity shop you'll find. They won't make a repair that you don't need and will admit if they don't have the ability to properly fix something. They get you in and out on schedule and the prices are reasonable. What more could you ask for?

I didn't think honest mechanics existed. This place proved me wrong. In my experience, they have never recommended any unecessary work (which has saved me a lot of money and aggravation) and are very thorough in explaining any underlying issues with my vehicle. The mechanics and staff are friendly and appear to really enjoy what they do which is refreshing. I highly recommend this place.

With that said, I have been in there several times to have something checked out to see if it was a problem or not and they don't charge for the diagnostic issues I've had and only charged when I've needed actual maintenance performed on my car.

5 stars for their HONESTY! I noticed my 2011 Hyundai Accent acting strange and the check engine light came on, and I immediately took it in to them. I also needed an oil change. They did an oil change ($30, a good price), and looked at my car, while I waited (didn't take them long at all). They said that one of my cylinders was misfiring (still no idea what that means!) and I should take it to the dealership because a repair would probably be covered under warranty. Now that is an honest mechanic! I know a lot of places would never try and help me save money like that, and instead write me up a hefty quote. I will definitely go there if/when my car has any more trouble. I highly recommend them.

I woke up yesterday morning to find that my car wouldn't start. I gave them a call and they said just to have it towed right on over. The gentleman talked to me for 10 mins to understand the problem and said I didn't need to accompany my car there if i didn't want to but that they would asses it and get back to me. Sure enough, after lunch time I go the call. Freaking out that I was going to be in a serious financial situation to fix the car, I was pleased to find out that the security/antitheft system in my car's computer was being wacky and had prevented the car from starting. They were completely honest and upfront with me about what the issue was and even offered to show me how to start my car if the issue ever happened again. This could have been an opportunity for them to completely rip me off, but they didn't. The diagnostic work and fix cost me about $75 bucks, which I think is a little overpriced. But, for the honest and pleasant service I received, I am very happy.
They will receive my business again.

My car was leaking oil horribly and I took it to the AAA car care center in Charleston, SC (where I live). After spending $700 to have the car fixed 3 months prior, they proceeded to tell me it would be over $2,000 to get my car fixed.. the car is worth about that.
I called my dad back home in Baltimore and he came down to get the car and take it to Christopher, his mechanic.
Christopher has been at Holenshade's over 15 years and Dad swears by them.
Sure enough, the part to fix the oil leak was $5 and Christopher had it fixed in 30 minutes.
Then he recommended the Meineke in Cockeysville (York Rd) to get some flex thing replaced on my muffler. He said it should be about $250 and 20 minutes to fix.
Sure enough, I went to there, mentioned Hollenshade's had sent me, and 20 min later, they gave me a $50 discount and i was out the door. I recommend them as well, honest guys.
Moral of the story, find a mechanic you can trust. If you live in the Baltimore Metro area, go to Hollenshade's.
Even though I had to drive 620 miles and stop every 100 to top off the car with oil, it was well worth it. Christopher saved me a lot of trouble and money.
I will always take my vehicles to Hollenshade's as long as he is there. From what I can tell, the other guys are equally as reputable and they do good business.

They know a vast array of domestic and foreign cars, won't do work that's not needed, can often look over cars you're considering buying to help you make your decision, etc. They take car of your car quickly if you drop it off. I just moved to the area, and when I broke down on 295 in the middle of the night I didn't know where to take my car so I turned to yelp. Thank God for the recommendation to Hollenshade's, I will now take my car there in the future. I towed it there from AAA, and contacted the shop online for an appointment. They were closed since it was a Sunday, but the shop manager, John, got back to me the very same day. I called them Monday morning about 11am, and they let me know the bad news about my head gasket, and possible internal engine damage. He told me that they didn't do the work there, but recommended another shop that I could take it to along with their phone number. When my dad & I contacted them to let them know we decided to just get rid of the car since the repair wouldn't be worth it, they offered us a free tow to take it to the junk yard. I just moved here from Pittsburgh, and my title is at home with my parents somewhere or we may have to order another, but John understood and even though their vacation week is next week, they said it would be no problem to keep the car on the lot, and there is no rush to getting the title. The customer service is superb, John is such a good, understanding gentleman, and I will definitely be taking my car there anytime it needs work.

When my car broke down I drove around to a bunch of places and could feel that I was getting ripped off. Half of them wouldn't even look at my car without a flat fee and the others were suggesting work that would have cost hundreds of dollars. I'm not from Baltimore and have always operated using a mechanic that was recommended to me by a friend or family member. I really wanted someone that I could trust and consulted Yelp. I'm not too close to Towson, but when I read the other reviews I had to go here.
Everyone was so nice to me! They immediately started working on my car and would periodically come over and explain everything to me (without making me feel like a moron). It turned out the problem was super simple and they charged me $18 dollars for the work! Not to mention pumped my tires for free. The least I could do is write this review. I wouldn't go anywhere else!

Of all the people we asked for a mechanic recommendation every single one said go to Hollenshades. I can't say I regret it. Hollenshades takes care of your car quickly and professionally. They told me I should get a new truck if I didn't want driveline vibration in my truck. They could have replaced my drive shaft and I would have gladly payed, but they tried several lazy guesses which cost a lot in labor charges. I'm sure this place is good. I think they just don't want to spend the time to diagnose problems. Also, I believe they have a lot of wealthy, loyal customers so they don't have to really try. When they tell someone to buy a new truck, they probably actually buy a new truck.
