Exhaust System repair 1992 Ford Explorer

After having received discouraging comments about the fixability of my 23 year old Ford Explorer from a dealer, I was pleasantly surprised by the Muffler House's "no problem to fix" opinion and the reasonable cost estimate. My Explorer was…

Oil Change turning into much more than asked for

Although the workmanship appears to be fine, I was certainly surprised that it cost over $300 for an oil change on a Toyota Camry. After reviewing the bill, there was a 50,000 mile check up done as well, with all the tasks that are…

They lost my car keys. To be fair, the work they did on my car--it was fine and reasonably priced. Customer service and communication--not so much. I paid for the work and agreed to pick my car up after hours (as I work during their business hours), and was told the keys would be locked in the car when the work was done. I arrived to pick up my car only to learn they forgot to leave my keys...but, I had a spare set and mistakes happen. I called the next day, they admitted to forgetting the keys and agreed to leave them in a specific spot for me to pick up after business hours that day. I get a call that evening on my way to pick up the keys saying, "We had the keys waiting for you on the counter all day but you didn't come. Don't come by to pick them up, they won't be outside." I called for an explanation and was told my keys and invoice were given to the wrong people and they were trying to figure out where they were. They were about to leave for the day and said they would call "either tonight or tomorrow" if they found who had my keys...Needless to say, the communication/customer service could use some improvement. They didn't call until the next afternoon and, upon demanding compensation for attempting to pick up my keys twice (it's a 30-40 minute drive to get there), going 4 days without my keys, and the string of errors they made, here's what they said: "A customer also made a mistake by picking up your keys.* I'm sorry that your opinion finds that mistakes cannot be made by a small business but that it is poor customer service." *****Please note that research shows car keys are not one size fits all. Attempting to use the incorrect keys which don't fit properly in the ignition will result in the inability to drive away.*****

Please read the whole review. My exhaust wasn't hooked up after this service and as such was a danger to my and other's lives. I took my car here to get the area in front of the muffler in my 1989 Nissan moved up. Being that this basically a track car, I didn't care how the exhaust looked, I just wanted the end of the muffler raised to help mitigate the scraping issue it was having going over uneven ground. I dropped the car off before they opened at 8, and called around 2 to see how things were going. He told me that the exhaust was bad, which I knew, and that he wouldn't work on the exhaust without pulling it all down and fixing the whole exhaust. He quoted me $300, which is about $40 more than a brand new performance exhaust for this car. I respectfully declined and informed him I would be by to pick the car up after they closed and asked where the keys would be. My coworker dropped me off at Muffler Warehouse at about 5:30. I walked up to the car and immediately noticed a paper on my dashboard. The text of that paper is as follows: "EXHAUST IS A MESS, ESTIMATE AROUND 300.00. SUSPENSION IS MESSED UP, CAUSING FRONT INSIDE TIRE WEAR. IN MY OPINION THIS CAR IS NOT SAFE FOR THE ROAD. move the front part of the exhaust up **** symptoms **** exhaust" So there's actual quite a few issues with that. First of all, being that I asked for exhaust work, and not a state inspection or an opinion of the car, why is the suspension even mentioned? The "inside tire wear" is an imagined result of extended lower control arms that produce negative camber. If you looked at it you would think it would wear tires faster but it really doesn't. The tires on the car are brand new, and as such have no wear. I also didn't ask for the front part of the exhaust to be moved up, I asked for the area immediately in front of the muffler to be moved up. Minor detail but there's a few feet between these areas. Anyway, I started to drive off, thinking that being that they hadn't worked on the car, that nothing exhaust wise would have changed. It should also be mentioned that where they parked the car would be a challenge to get out of in my Focus, which isn't lowered, and was basically a nightmare to get out of with this car. As I got on the road (completely disregarding their opinion of the roadworthiness of this car. I've bought entire cars that cost less than what the suspension components cost in this car) I noticed that the exhaust was louder than when I originally brought it to them, and was also dragging on less severe terrain that it had been. I went to a friend's house who lived nearby, where we quickly realized that the exhaust clamp immediately after the exhaust manifold had been loosened, and had allowed the exhaust to slide out and drag on the ground. Being that this is the forward-most part of the exhaust pipe, and large bump or pothole could have ripped the entire system out, towards the back of the car and into the path of a following vehicle. There was also a bolt missing from where the midpipe meets the axleback. All of these now loose or missing components were tight and present when I left my house to go to Muffler House that morning. The clamp between the exhaust manifold and pipe was actually the tightest clamp in the system. I spent 4 hours and $20 getting the exhaust back to the state it was in prior to me dropping it off. I can't prove it but I believe this was done intentionally due to my unwillingness to approve repairs and service. I would not go here again if there was a firetuck out front and I was on fire.

I needed a new engine for my CRV, spoke with Bob, he got online and found me the best deal on a new/used motor in no time. He was upfront and very honest told me exactly how much it would cost, and what it was going to take, I couldn't have asked for a better experience. I will be a returning customer.

I crashed at 1:30 am on the interstate and made it to the Muffler house in the AM.. They squared this flat lander away (from RI) they dealt with the insurance company, fixed things not on the my invoice, had a rental car in house at a great rate. Top notch, on time and under budget. This all just before Christmas !! Thank you

I took my car to get its muffler and center exhaust pipe fixed. (I had verified the symptoms, and this did indeed seem to be the problem). I was quoted a price of $625 to replace the muffler and center exhaust pipe, or a lower price just to fix the muffler. I agreed to fixing the pipe as well, as the nature of the problem seemed to indicate a need for replacement. The car was fixed in a timely fashion and seems to have been fixed competently. When I came to pick the car up, an invoice for $870 was waiting for me. I said that I'd been given a quote of $625, then waited for a reply. The lady behind the counter said she did not understand why there was a discrepancy, but would call the mechanic. She did so, then fixed the invoice for $630, which is what I paid. The final invoice I received has a line item at the bottom saying the original quote was $870, which was most certainly NOT the verbal quote I'd received. In light of the other reviews, I cannot say this boosts my confidence in The Muffler House, which is a pity, as I'd prefer to be able to write glowing recommendations of local businesses. I'm afraid this is not so with The Muffler House, and if you have an alternative, do not choose a dishonest mechanic.

So we are here for the summer and the exhaust pipe fro convert to tail pipe breaks. Being we have a Toyota and replacing with OEM parts gives you a great warranty we stopped at local dealer and were quoted over $2100. For parts only! Used Yelp to find Muffler House and called for an appointment to check out car. Got there and they took car in told us whats wrong and said we just need repaired until we get back in the south where we plan on trade this fall. They said we can repair it for about 4 c notes and it will be as good as OEM. It took a little over and hour. Very good job!
Would give them a 5 star had they had a better waiting room!

I figured I'd take a chance at Muffler House, a locally owned business versus the Midas Muffler (a chain) or White River Toyota (where I know I would be ripped off for triple the price). I made an appointment ahead of time and brought my car in right when they opened. They gave me a quick free quote and I decided to go ahead with what they said needed to be done to fix the muffler. I left and came back two hours later and all the work was done. The staff were friendly and did great work. I would recommend Muffler House to anyone in the Upper Valley who needs mechanic work.

September 2015 update.
Apparently, the owner of the Muffler House sent me a message on FB messenger soon softer the original review. For whatever reason, I did not discover this message until 13 months later. She tried to explain the error and said that I should have talked to her directly. Hmm, I talked to whomever was 'in charge' at the shop that day and he was none too friendly nor apologetic. Well, perhaps if she wanted to make things right, she could have contacted me. After all, the have my address and phone number. A FB message was passive at best. Like I said in my original review, I really wanted to like them. My experience has been checkered. So I am upping them one more star.

Nothing but the best things to say about the staff and owners at the muffler house. They have worked on my cars for a few years and done great, fast work on time and at the quoted price. When another shop tried over quoting my wife for a repair that should have been noticed at a recent inspection (also at the other shop), I took my wife's car to the Muffler House and they were able to do the work faster and cheaper than the competitor!

They wanted to charge me $58 for a standard oil change (basic oil and low mileage)...when they quoted $20 to someone else. It's laughable that they think they can rip you off if you're a girl calling. I'm an engineer, getting oil changes at shops is a convenience for me, not a luxury.
