I moved to Carson Valley 12 years ago and asked a neighbor for a recommendation for a good local garage mechanic.
My neighbor highly recommended Garderville Automotive and it's owner, Joe.
I've found over 12 years, that Garderville Automotive has been excellent in their insight and ability to repair my personal cars and my work trucks.
Last January Joe suggested that at 150,000 my GMC , truck might need a fuel pump replacement before it failed.
I opted to be cheap and turned down his suggestion. That next weekend at Squaw Valley( at my kids ski competition),
my fuel pump failed. It stranded my two children and me in the Squaw parking lot at 4 PM on a cold Sunday.
That failure, by me, to take Joes suggestion, added cost of over $1000 in total to get the vehicle towed and repaired from damage the tow truck company did.
It added three days to what would have otherwise been a quick fix.
I can not speak more highly about Gardnerville Automotive but to put it in the same retail brackets as my other favorite retailers which include, Apple Computer, Costco, & Virgin America airlines.
The only significant criticism I would give is the quality of their restroom could be improved.

brought my car in for some major repairs, car was done on time and they saved me some money, charges were less than the estimate, great job

I brought my subara Baja to get oil changed twice both times they told me I needed brakes I and a friend check yourselfs brakes were fine. I would think twice before you take your care there NOT honest wanted $600 for brake job.

I took my car in for a minor problem and they didn't pay much attention to what was wrong, but instead replaced some other parts that didn't need to be replaced. That didn't do me any good and cost several hundred dollars. I took my car to a different shop and they knew what the problem was and were able to tell me how to fix it for free. I would not recommend Gardnerville Automotive.
