Friends,
I am reluctant to write this review but here it is. I came into town from out of state for a weekend conference. My car lost power about 20 miles south of town and I had it towed into the hotel (Marriott Resort) since it was late at night and I didn't know who a good mechanic in town would be. Wait until the next day.
I spent five hours talking to my own two excellent mechanics from home, and many local people who names I had been given. Everyone was booked up until Wednesday the next week. Someone from a AAA shop recommended this shop and gave me the man's name. She said he was honest I should try him. The Marriott Resort itself also said they had sent guests to him - but they couldn't speak about his quality. Only they they had never had any complaints.
Ok! he said he could change out the water pump that afternoon no problem. The car was towed there, and I began to relax a little. He received the car at noon on Friday. Saturday I went to the car to get some things and he began to tell me all the terrible things wrong with the car. My mechanic had advised just getting a belt to bypass the compressor and then get home to him. Now, it was the compressor not the water pump. First he said he couldn't find an 1805 mm serpentine belt, then he said it wouldn't work. Then he insisted that I have the compressor repaired and maybe the condensor. Then he said, maybe the hoses need to be repaired.
Freaking out, I said. Please just get it back on the road and allow me to get home safely. He refused to just put in the car's own manual's recommended extended serpentine belt, saying it wouldn't work. For $40, and on the advice of several mechanics, yes it would work just fine.
Monday comes, no word. My mechanic says get the serpentine belt (extended), bypass the compressor and drive it home! Get out of there, he said. Nothing from this mechanic. When I called and asked him what was going on he became angry and said that he wouldn't know if the car was drivable until later and that maybe it would need more work, including the condensor and several special hoses that he couldn't even get in stock until the end of the week. After arguing with him, he told me to just get my car out of there.
At that point I called the police. They came, politely discussed the matter with the owner and filed a report. The owner claimed the bill was for only $171 but he had quoted me $871.
After several more hours of harrowing negotiations and calling around town, I found a fantastic local man and he referred me to another excellent shop specializing in foreign cars. I paid the $461 for his bill, $300 of which was his labor. I told him that if he took good care of me I would reward him with excellent feedback to the hotel and AAA. Since he did not, I will reward him with his own comments and behavior back to the hotel and AAA. We are all of us known by our character, be it good or bad. I say a good character is priceless.
Addendum: If you should ever have trouble with this mechanic, I encourage you to report him to the BAR (Bureau of Automotive Repair) for California. They have investigated him a few times over the years but would be happy to investigate him again.
