I've known Cal Garmin for nearly 10 years. He has worked on my Mazda Van, Geo Metro, girlfriends Jetta, daughters Jeep Cherokee and even fixed my boat trailer when the axle rusted out and left me stranded. He has always been there for me and his prices are fair and I've trusted him with my families safety. Last year he worked on daughter's Jeep Cherokee and later on a long trip the right rear started to smoke. The car was taken to a local repair shop and the cause was an overly tighten emergency brake. The entire brake needed replacement and the mechanic pointed out this happens but noted he could tell the repair job was done by a pro as everything was lubed perfectly. Then last month my girl friends Jetta stopped in the middle of the road. Engine running but no power to the wheels. Car was towed to a local shop and the cause was the bolts connecting the drivers side CV joint to the axle had falling out. The passenger side was fine but only two of the six bolts on the drivers side were there and they were just hanging. Ordered new bolts and the car was on the road again in a few days. I contacted Cal, told him what I was told and gave him the phone number of the shop in Florida. Cal had replaced the CV joints less than a year ago and and tried to explain that these things happen. I did my research and it's pretty clear these things don't just happen when the repair is done correctly. Once this repair is made all bolts must be torqued and if they are not torqued they will eventually work their way out. Less than a year ago he charged me $350 to replace both CV axle joints and also did the timing belt and water pump for a total of $1,165. Mistakes happen and most garages when confronted with a mistake will offer to make the customer whole. Cal didn't do this, in matter of fact he became hostile Instead of saying "Hey Dave I'm really sorry clearly something wasn't done right." He gave me a load of crap and then said he didn't like my attitude. I'm a father of two daughters, a former naval officer, a naval academy gradate with a masters in business who has worked for himself since 1995. I'm also a private pilot how co-owns a plane. I don't get excited about many things and I wasn't excited about this. I just wanted Cal to level with me as he had always done in the past and at least offer to cover the cost I incurred with the botched repair. An apology would have gone a long way as this could have had a far worse outcome had the failure occurred on a busy Florida highway. It's honestly sad our relationship is over not because I've lost trust in him not as a mechanic, as these things happen but because I've lost faith in him as a person.
