Mike is very honest and trustworthy-an important trait to find in a mechanic, since most of us don't know much about cars!

First off, I took my car in and had them fix it and the check engine light was still on. I figured they reset the computer and it didnt adjust yet. Next thing you know I go to emissions and i FAILED it. I was told the problem and I got it double check from a mechanic I know and had him give me a diagnostic test and the problems were showing up the same thing as the emissions place. I called for an estimate and told them what the problems are for my car and they couldn't give me and estimate over the phone (which I understand). But they told me that I dont have a reputable source for my problems being what they are despite maryland emissions telling me what is wrong with my car. So they are trying to make me fork over money for a diagnostic test that I have done TWICE already and told me they're not interested in fixing my car just because I wont pay for their diagnostic test when I already know what is wrong. I KNOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY CAR.The person was a jerk to me over the phone.I DONT recommend this place. Paid $600 for practically nothing to get fixed. Thanks Coale's.

The mechanics that work here seemed like nice enough guys, but I was VERY dissatisfied with the work done on my car. I originally brought it in to get the brakes and rotors changed. They told me I needed new ones all the way around and I was fine with that. So after I got my car back I noticed a couple of days later my brakes were making a clunking noise every time I would press on the brakes to slow down. At first I just thought it was me wearing in the brakes, but the noise didn't seem like it was going away. I took the car back into them and told them about the noise, making sure I stressed that it definitely wasn't making this noise before. They called me back later and told me the issue. They said the rotors sit on caliber sand the brakes were knocking against the caliber pins ( or something of that nature). They also then informed me that they damaged my car door accidentally. Apparently my car was on the lift and someone started lowering it not knowing there was a ladder underneath my car door. This all happened on a Tuesday and I didn't get my car back till that Friday which was a huge inconvenience since I work as a contractor and I couldn't work. Once I got my car back they were very apologetic about the car door, but what really made me mad was that they didn't fix the clunking sounds with the brakes. They told me that it wasn't anything to worry about bcuz it wasn't doing any damage to the car.. But to me that's not the point! If I bring my car in to be serviced for one thing, I shouldn't leave there with it making another noise! To me that's just terrible customer service and I feel ripped off bcuz the clunking noise it's making now is louder than the squeaking my brakes were making when I brought it in originally. But I didn't feel like arguing nor did I want to go the weekend w/o my car. And I'm just p***** bcuz now I'm going to have to take it to another mechanic and spend more money (I spent $740 originally) to fix a new problem they created.

Chose this place to get my car inspected when I moved to Maryland 2 years ago and have been coming here ever since. I recommend this place wholeheartedly, and trust the owner and mechanics completely.

New to Maryland and the Odenton area, and had an issue with our Honda. I suspected a vacuum leak, but not a car guy so was not sure. We only have one car, so I took off a day of work to hopefully have this issue addressed. Took my car in at 8 on the day they gave me, and, based on the number of cars I saw and paperwork on the counter, I was thinking this was going to be a whole day process. However, I got a call at 9 am from technician who gave me a quote and answered a few questions, no BS. He took a moment to explain why my Honda did not have a fuel filter as I had thought and I appreciated that he didn't talk to me like I was an idiot. Told me car would be ready by 10 am, and it was, and the price paid was the price quoted. The owner was there when I picked up car and I thanked him for the treatment I received. Things happen, all you want as a customer is honesty and information up front, and that is what I received. I can quite honestly recommend this shop for your auto service.
On top of all this, the repairman called a few days later to make sure everything going well with the repairs to the Honda. Never have I seen that, appreciate the extra effort.

I called Coale's asking for an estimate on an oil change and the installation of a cabin air filter that I would provide. Total cost: $130!
That seemed really high so I decided to call other local shops. Hondaman (Pasadena) said $30 for the oil change and they would install the filter free. Guess which one I picked...

At first I was a fan of Coale's. I had some work done on my car a few months ago and was very wow'd by their service and offer to drive me home, etc. They seemed very humble and caring and it was a great experience. I recommended several of my friends who were also having car issues to come here.
I just let several of my friends know to no longer come to this establishment, and it's hard to say that because I really did believe in these guys.
My timing belt snapped and I had the car taken in. Days later after that I call and find out that the car ran for about 45-60 seconds, the mechanic heard "something bad" and then let me know the pistons in the engine were bent. Huh, that's great... but shit happens. I wasn't excited that during this process I was very left alone in the dark about when/what the heck was going on sometimes. I called 4 times, while I was only called twice during this whole process over the course of a week and a half. I sent them an email letting them know I wasn't thrilled about the communication between me and my car, and got no response or phone call about it. Cool.
As I now owe $1,050 on my car that is 0% closer to being fixed after nearly two weeks, I decide to tow my car to a friend's shop for a second opinion + to let them finish the job. I called Coale's and let them know I was going to tow it that day and swing by that weekend to pay. The man I talked didn't let me know that apparently that it would be the end of the world if I did that. He simply told me "Ok, thanks." and that was that. They're closed on Sundays, so I let them know Monday would be when I stopped in. Of course life doesn't go as planned and I was called into work, so I planned to come in Tuesday afternoon.
I woke up to this voicemail: "Hi, this is Chris from Coale's. You sent a tow truck up here to get your car knowing you haven't payed your bill. We normally wait a month to put a lien on your vehicle but we're in the process of putting one on yours now. We won't work with you on the bill. Your option is to pay the bill through the lien company or we keep your car. So uhh, thanks for your sly move but it didn't work. Give me a call back if you have the decency."
Uhhh, what the heck? I'm not doing anything "sly," "knowing you haven't payed your bill." I communicated all this. I called and told you all WHEN I was going to pay and that a TOW TRUCK was coming THAT day. You had no issues, and if it was such a big deal I should have been told right there on the spot. Plus, I sent a tow truck up there several days ago, why am I being called about this now?
I immediately drop what I'm doing to rush up there to pay. I'd like to believe I'm polite and I made small chatter + apologized for taking the man away from his work (he was in the shop at the time).
I mention that I wasn't really happy to hear the voice message this morning. He did accuse me of doing a lot of things, and there are much better ways to communicate that. Even if I did something wrong, let me know calmly and don't just assume the worst. Treat me with respect, I'm not a criminal. I'm a customer. At the drop of a dime of barely mentioning I wasn't happy about the voicemail, I get a heated response from Mr. Coale himself about how I was trying to screw them over by towing the car before payment.
I explain my story and how I called about when I was going to pay, and about the tow that was coming. They don't want to hear it, and blame me for not exclusively talking with Chris. I'm talked down to, called "son, kid" and very quickly they escalate and are yelling at me and cussing. At one point Mr. Coale storms off and points his finger at me and screams, "You don't try to fucking tow your car before you fucking pay!" and isn't seen again.
"All I'm trying to do is talk with you guys" is one of the last things I say. Me and Chris go through the timeline of what happened again. I'm listening to him and hearing him out. I run a business myself that deals with upset guests often, so I've been in his shoes several times before. But I'm not getting any empathy from him, and he doesn't care for what I have to say. I'm further cussed at and disrespected. I'm called impatient. He promises he called me after I talked to Chadd to let me know that the tow wasn't going to happen, but I have no call from him or messages. I show him this on my phone and he claims I "manipulated" my phone and deleted everything. Great... now I'm a liar! Fantastic.
Both of them basically ran away from me heated as I stood there just trying to talk to them. Guess I shouldn't stand up for myself or try to explain my side of things! Thought you guys had my back, but I guess not. Never going to Coale's again.

This is the auto shop you are searching for!
Fantastic and affordable service. Since moving to MD and finding them, I come here for everything because they are honest, fair, and experienced. Their goal seems to be to satisfy your actual auto needs and save you money, whether that means referring you to another business or working with you to find what works best for your situation. Coale's was the 4th auto shop in MD that looked at my Toyota truck and they recommended real solutions instead of inflated and costly ones recommended by Sears.

I had the alternator in my truck replaced here. They arranged for the towing, diagnosed and called me back same day, had it finished within a day, and came in under the originally quoted price. I am very impressed and will surely use their mechanical expertise again in the future.

I just moved to Maryland and need to get my cars inspected I took my 1985 Toyota Celica to Toyota of Bowie first for the inspection. I read that Maryland's inspection process is pretty strict so I wasn't surprised when they failed it. I was surprised with some of the reasons that they failed it on.
I felt like I was getting ripped off so I found several good reviews for Powertrain Automotive and took it there to get inspected. I made a mistake of giving them my receipt from Toyota of Bowie with the failure reasons.
Powertrain Automotive failed it for Tie rods, they wanted to replace all 4 rotors and brake pads. The red flag was when they failed it for the wiper blades. I had found the state Statutes for the Inspection process and looked up the requirements for the wipers.
The statute says reject if: There are worn or deteriorated blades that do not clean the windshield (within 5 cycles applicable to school vehicles only). My wipers clean the window on one swipe.
My wipers are three months old. I put new blades on December 2012.
Powertrain wanted $1,300 to get it to pass inspection.
I took my car to Coale's Automotive in Odenton. I do have a slight hole in the muffler, a brake hose needs to be replaced. The steering rack boots need to be replaced. The front brake rotors were questionable so I am getting them replaced. It will cost me $1,100 to fix and they are things that I would have fixed anyway.
Find a good honest mechanic like I did.
My ultimate goal with this inspection process was to find an Honest Mechanic. I have with Coale's.

These guys exemplify why small business owners beat out the big chains every time. All the mechanics here are knowledgeable professionals, the front office staff are always pleasant and helpful, and even the owner, Mike, makes time to discuss exactly which repairs are needed and which are not. They always, ALWAYS have fair prices on parts and labor and meet or beat their estimated turnaround times. I've taken them a 2008 Saab 9-3, a 1980 Ramcharger, and a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee and they're fully capable of taking care of all three. I will be taking my cars to Coale's every time without a doubt.

I hit a big rock that was in the middle of the highway on my way to work. I reached my destination and sure enough my tire was losing air pressure. I looked for the closest place to get my tire patched. I went to Coale's and they had me fixed up in 20 minutes. The guys were very polite and knowledgeable. They answered all of my questions. Since it was my first time there and it didn't take very long, they gave the service to me for free. I would definitely go back!
